Backman wrecks me again! So emotional. Dark and hard to read in parts so proceed with caution but I cared so much about so many characters in this town.

I did not know what to expect from this book, but it blew me away. This isn’t your average sports story. In fact, it’s hardly about the sport at all. Even in individual chapters and sentences, the author subverted my expectations in the best way. So smartly written. A heavy, difficult read at times, but one written with the utmost care for its deeply human characters.

I want Fredrik Backman to write my life's story.

Despite the story being heartbreaking, it didn’t hook me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautifully written but having so many characters and so many things going on at the same time is confusing. I like it but wouldn’t go on with the series.

I understand the hype. As a hockey lover, I was pleased with how much the sport was intertwined with the story. But really, hockey didn’t need to be part of the story at all. It was never about the sport. Backman simply found an ingenious way to illustrate the vile effects of rape culture and patriarchy. The story touched on so many experiences, while never feeling as though things were just thrown in for no reason, making it incredibly well-rounded.
