I loved the diverse characters of in this book and how the fantasy lore drew upon different cultures. I loved the romance and the relationships built between the main protagonists.
I think there were some issues with plot and pacing, but overall a really fun, unique, and interesting read. Would read again!

This book made me grin madly, then ugly cry out of sadness, and then made me cry again out of happiness. Thanks, I needed that cry, really needed this feel-good.

While I was intrigued by the premise and have a soft spot for paranormal romances, this book did not quite work for me.
This fast-paced paranormal romance is centered around a magical healer in hiding from her family, a half-eleven fixer who is in dire need of a job change and how their lives intertwine.
The concept was intriguing and I enjoyed the incorporation of different cultural heritages, as well as themes such as complex family dynamics, depression and burnout.
Sadly, I thought that the pacing was slightly off, with a lot of fast paced and, at times, traumatic scenes, a lot of banter (that did not always hit) and not enough time spent on the characters delving deeper into their feelings and their mental health problems. Instead there were a lot of time skips and everything felt quite surface level.
I think the author had an interesting idea, but the execution was a bit lacking regarding the romance as well as the action.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a good story overall, and I absolutely loved the character development. Elle and Luc slowly learning more and more about each other, and in turn more about themselves, was really fun to read. The author did a great job peeling back the layers of their personalities throughout the book, and watching them challenge each other emotionally and grow together was delightfully captivating.
I also enjoyed the mix of cultures, languages, and folklore, and this book has me looking at more xianxia novels.
However, the worldbuilding left something to be desired, and the pacing was weird for me. You get bits of the background world sprinkled throughout, but never more than just enough to tell the character's story. And the pacing was very up and down, with slower, romance-esque chapters that were cute and engaging until they drug on to the point of boring, immediately into fast-paced go, go, go sections that you would expect from an exciting fantasy, and then right back into the mundane. This felt like a whirlwind and made the exciting pieces feel anticlimactic. Some of the conversations also felt choppy and unnatural, contributing to the off pacing.
There were also some questionable decisions made by both Elle and Luc that were very out of character, and seemed to be made as a means to the author's desired end. Or like she was planning to take the book one way, changed her mind and went another route, and didn't go back and tidy everything up. This was jarring and confusing, and we were left without an explanation for several big decisions/events. For me, this was the most disappointing aspect of this book (but also maybe a lesson that you won't get answers to all of life's questions..?).
Overall, a solid book with a several question marks that I was able to overlook due to my attachment to the characters.

I devoured this book. It was so easy to fall into this world and though I didn't understand all the references or other languages, I didn't feel like I missed anything.
I found the characters lovable and strange and sweet and loving. Ultimately, a story of family and love.
