This book… I have no words. And the cliffhanger… ahhhhhhh! I can’t wait to read the next book! I loved War Hour. It kept me on my toes and I was questioning things left and right. I was right about some, wrong on others, and some questions remain unanswered. This book was addicting, I read it in two sittings, but I had stayed up really late the night before an AP test to do so. I could not put it down, there was always a trial happening or survival on the line. You never knew who to trust. I would say the focus of the story is not the trials that the accomplish in each court, but the politics of it all. This book seemed to really gear up for something more near the end, so I assume more action is to come right out of the gate with book 2. The writing style is also perfection. You are never questioning what the author was trying to say with a line and she blends the story extremely well across chapters. It was also nice to fall into a YA read that didn’t have explicit scenes or rely on cussing as the main form of communication (I don’t remember any language, but I feel like at most a couple words).
I am so thankful that I came across Mrs. Lauren Losig on instagram and found myself intrigued enough to sign up for an ARC read… because BEST DECISION EVER. Thank you for the opportunity!
I am trying to keep away from the spoilers, but here are a couple things about the book
- you earn your powers
- stubborn and strong willed FMC
- mysterious MMC
- fictional politics
- historical aspects: keeping population uneducated to be manipulated
- he calls her fighter
- would say this book is more about trust and friendships, not romance (it doesn’t hold much romantic tension either, but you can see the spark of potential future relationships)
Some quotes:
"First lesson," … says as … guides my grip higher on the hilt of the sword.
"There will always be someone stronger than you. Someone bigger than you. You will rarely have a strength advantage in the fights that actually matter. But-
"You're really building my confidence here."
I never said I was wise. I'm from Valor ... You know-bravery, and all that."
Information is as much a weapon as any blade, and I don't want to be caught with a weak hand.
When asked my favorite character I said…
Honestly can’t choose! She did a great job writing them. I have always loved the best friend side characters and hope to see more of Thoman as well as learn more about Ardis in the future. And Ofc I like Torryn, Lysta, and Sarielle! I did love Evander’s character arc… and I want to see how his character continues to change. He did force her to trial, but it did give her a chance of life instead of immediate execution. What happened in the court of truth overall makes me question why he wanted her to join so bad as well. I feel like he can’t decide if he wants to kill her or save her from everything.

Jail time for making me wait until next year for book 2! I loved this. A fresh take on the fantasy genre and lots of fun characters.

Soooo I read this book hoping for a completely different magic power system, and it delivered.
The writing is great and the descriptions are as much detailed as it's needed I was easily able to imagine the characters and the locations.
I loved the magic system and the politics, the first one was the one thing I was more interested in and it reached and exceeded my expectations, I loved the fact that if you wanted to own magic power you had to show that you were worthy of theme and risk your life to get theme.
Another thing that I loved was the relationships between the characters and their personalities, even though I would love to see more of Ardis and Sar's backgrounds and interactions(they could easily become my favorite couple in the series).
I don't want to give any spoilers so I won't add anything, except that I look forward to the next books.

"War Hour" by Lauren Loscig is an exceptional novel that completely captured my heart. From the very first page, I was hooked, and now I find myself eagerly anticipating the release of the second book. This story has effortlessly captivated my imagination, leaving me craving for more.
As an avid reader who often prides myself on predicting plot twists and guessing endings, it is refreshing to come across a book that manages to catch me off guard. "War Hour" did just that, surprising me with unexpected twists and turns. Lauren Loscig's ability to navigate the plot in unpredictable ways is truly remarkable, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and ensuring that every moment is full of suspense and intrigue.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) reader for "War Hour" and would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Lauren Loscig. Being able to dive into the story before its official release was a privilege and added an extra layer of excitement to my reading experience. It's a joy to witness the creation of such a captivating world and share the anticipation with the author.
One aspect of the novel that I found particularly compelling was the growth of the main character, Lysta, throughout the narrative. As she faces numerous struggles and obstacles, it is truly satisfying to see her evolve and learn from her experiences. This growth adds depth and authenticity to her character, making her journey relatable and inspiring.
What sets "War Hour" apart from other stories is its portrayal of earned powers or abilities. Often, in many narratives, characters suddenly gain a new power and instantly know how to use it flawlessly. However, in this novel, the struggles of learning and mastering these newfound abilities are realistically portrayed. It acknowledges the difficulties and challenges that come with acquiring and harnessing such powers, which adds a layer of realism to the story. This approach allows readers to witness the characters' growth and development as they navigate the learning process, creating a more immersive and engaging experience.
In conclusion, "War Hour" is an absolute gem that should not be missed. With its ability to surprise even the most adept readers, a heartfelt thank you to Lauren Loscig for providing such a captivating reading experience. The growth of the main character, Lysta, and the realistic portrayal of acquiring new abilities add depth and authenticity to the story. I eagerly await the release of the second book and can't wait to share the wonders of "War Hour" with everyone I know.
