I honestly see no reason not to give it 5-stars!
This could very well be the next BIG YA fantasy...IMO

The story follows a willful, sassy mouthed yet compassionate female lead whom I think tries to be stubborn but doesn't really work out lol
She always has a comment despite her better judgement and gets herself into trouble.
We got a dark haired grumpy know it all who doesn't talk about his feelings or much actually and has a damaged bad boy rep going around the capitol... Unfortunately... I love it and all his frustrating brooding glory.
There's the blonde pretty boy who seems perfect in every way and respected but seems too good to be true for all this swooning. He's too good for our girl. Literally uses every interaction he gets to display his rizz...and I eat it up every single freaking time. Its heartwarming honestly
Obviously this is YA soo little to no spice BUT I'm content with the romance. And sometimes.... guys, the courting can be the best part.
Sort of love triangle-ie ish?
I like the side characters. I actually want to see more of them and their roles coming up.

Its called War. Hour. Yes it has action and battle scenes which I love to read and envision playing out before me. However, they may be low stakes right now, I'm very sure there's way more action and severity to come in the following books as well.

I love the riddles and mystery. How the power is obtained through the deadly trails and how said trails can be solved in a multitude of ways leading to varying abilities. That is so unique and appreciated! Refreshing honestly.

Cliffhanger!!! Ugh! That's all I'm going to say as I wait in anguish to read the next book! Which is the only sucky part about having read it before it even comes out.
Can't wait to see more lore! You know the whys and how's of it all and what exactly did the trial mean hmmmm interesting.

I was too entranced to take note of every quote that I found amazing but here are a few.

"She should be where I can protect her.”
"Taking a deep breath, he looks at me in bewilderment. “Okay, I’m insulted.”
“Because I have no reason to acquaint myself with someone who will just be used against me"
“Little does he know that pale blue is my favorite color.”
“Tell me who did this, and I will take care of it. Anyone who thought they could lay a hand on you should fear for their life.”

The majority of these quotes are from the man holding my heart. I'm sure you will all agree with my taste.

Thank you to the wonderful author Lauren Loscig for and an advanced copy. This is my genuine review. AND despite receiving a free eARC I will be buying a physical copy to put with my collection and support the her.

adventurous dark medium-paced

This book wanted to be ACOTAR but is much closer to Divergent.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy this book, because I did! And saying I enjoyed it doesn’t negate the fact that I have some qualms with the writing style and story progression.

All of that aside, I’m 50/50 on whether or not I’ll be picking up the sequel. I’m interested for sure, but I need a little convincing. Maybe if I see the blurb for the second and if it piques my interest, I could make something work.

3.5! ✨

War Hour by Lauren Loscig
Book Blurb
When powers are earned and not born, who shall wield them?

Lysta lives in constant fear of Trialing, a deadly test that bestows an ability upon its victors, but only after pushing their mental and physical limits. Forced to Trial against her will, Lysta becomes a weapon others plan to use against the Untrialed, until an unexpected intruder from another Court presents her with an opportunity to stop it. But can she trust the plans of a man who seems to play the lines between enemy and ally?

Only through treason can Lysta save the people she once struggled beside. With the fate of her Court and the lives of the Untrialed at stake, the burden will fall on Lysta to convince the other Courts to intervene. Not to mention, the Crowns seem to fear the frustrating, albeit handsome man who rescued her, more than the one she testifies against. Lysta must find her own strength in a world of powers, battles, and court politics while navigating tumultuous relationships and hidden enemies.
Will Lysta save her Court or be ended by it?

Things to consider when reading this book.
-debut novel
-Indie book
-first in the series (projected to be 4 or 5 !!)

I loved this book!
I always give a new fantasy book a few chapters since it takes so much to get acquainted with a new fantasy world. But once you are through those, the adventure starts rolling. There were so many unexpected developments in the story that kept me interested throughout the whole thing! And while some of the character’s motives were not subtle, at all, that did not take away from the larger story line.
Lysta is a fierce and teachable FMC. While she struggles a little in the beginning to keep up, she quickly steps into herself, which I loved witnessing. Torryn…let’s just say I hope to know more about him in the next book. There are some breadcrumbs of a found family, which I also hope will lead to an unbreakable bond between characters as this story continues. And of course, there are some nasty characters with lots of choices to judge, which I love.
Finally, the Trials! The things that set this book apart. The things that hook you into adding War Hour to your TBR. The things that grant powers or ends your life. From reading other reviews it seems that people are split between loving the Trials as they are or wanting more from them. I am on the loving them side. I think the whole system of Trialing is unique, and really speaks to the character of each individual (similar to signets in Forth Wing!). I do still have questions about the history of the trials, so I will definitely be reading the second one ASAP!

A really high 4 stars!
Firstly, I want to say thank you to the author for choosing me to be one of the ARC readers. My first ever ARC and for such a good book!

I was almost afraid to start this, fearing that I would be disappointed. I wasn't. Had to wait a bit before reading it because real life got in the way but I started last night and finished it tonight and I could not put it down. The plot is tight and there is so much happening but it's easy to follow (and even when it is not at first, you catch on pretty quickly later in the book). The Courts were intriguing and the Capital even more so. Plenty of new characters are thrown at us immediately but you learn to navigate them and their veiled politics. LOVED the Trials and the idea behind them - earning your powers. That was what drew me in to the book to even register for the ARC and I was so pleased to learn more and to learn what is actually behind the Trials and how dangerous they are and how they work. I hope we get to see the other Trials in the sequel/s too because I have a desperate need to learn more.

Evander I had no love for from the start, sorry to say. But I grew to love the Heirs, specially Bash and Sar. But Torryn, you damn fool. I want more of you. Knew that we were coming up to something with him. AND
Spoilerhe was the only one who came. I want to cry.
And DAMN what a cliffhanger HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE?!

SpoilerAnd color me surprised that we got two different "WHO HURT YOU" from two different characters and my mind almost blanked because, yes, thank you dear author, THANK YOU. Although I immediately knew that Torryn is actually the one to look out for and obviously endgame grghhh now I just have to wait for it.

One more thing I need to say - I always fear reading 1st POV because most of them are just simply not written well. Here that is not the case. It's written very well, I liked the descriptions and the emotions and I liked Lysta's voice. I loved Lysta. It's not often that my fave character is the main one but I loved Lysta from the beginning and I stayed in love with her to the end. Cannot wait to read more!

I was lucky enough to receive this as my first ARC book! This book gets 4.5/5 stars from me because 1) I didn’t realize it was going to end on a MAJOR cliffhanger and 2) it wasn’t giving enemies to lovers in any sense (and that was a promoted trope going into this lol). Spice is 0/5 peppers — I know it’s YA but I hope to see just a litttttle more in the next books haha.

This book was fun and engaging to read, and it was very much a true YA fantasy novel. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series when it comes out. I would recommend this book to all my book girlies, and hope they all pick up a copy when it comes out.

Loved this book so much. The idea of not being born with powers is so unique and the plot was good. I need a book 2!
