Phenomenal! This book kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to read more. I finished it in one day. I really enjoyed the concept of having to earn magical powers instead of being born with them. It was an amazing palate cleanser. I’m super excited for the second book, this one left on a cliff hanger. I would highly recommend to anyone needing a good fantasy read.
I was extremely intrigued by the concept and premise of the book, but I found the characters to be flat, the world building & powers not explained enough, and the sentence structure & writing confusing. Really cool concept, just needed more editing.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book
I had high hopes for this book based on the descriptions, and I was NOT disappointed! The book is fast paced and easy to read while not being boring or straightforward. There were so many mysteries being slowly unraveled and many more that I look forward to the next book!
Lysta is an interesting narrator, her naivete makes for a twisty plot line and her good heart makes her an easy character to love. Other than her, every character was very carefully planned and I was on the edge of my seat even waiting for my "unlikable" characters to see what they would do next. Everything was perfectly balanced and I hope to see how Lysta's relationships flip in the next book.
I also wonder about the other trials and how they will come into play, I hope Lysta is able to trial at most (if not all) so the different tests and powers can be seen~
Overall, the book was very enjoyable and unique, definitely a recommended read!

I will 100% be coming back for the second book - a very promising debut
there were multiple turns that I did not see this book taking (all good things - at least in terms of book structure lol) and I liked the world building
a big thing for me is that the world doesn't seem to have a religion, which makes it stand out from the other fantasy books like it that I have read. the power/magic system is also completely based on merit as opposed to birth, which is another thing.
the one aspect that I didn't like as much was the pacing, which I felt moved a little too fast at points. It also caused me to be confused about character's relationship development as any time jumps were not extremely clear to me.
overall would definitely recommend, especially if you like ya fantasy and characters fighting for the things and people that they care about
Thank you to the author (and her team) for for providing me with a free and advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

wow. where to begin? war hour was such an impressive debut novel, one i enjoyed immensely! the writing, the characters, the plot! *mwah* the worldbuilding was simple, but with how the novel was set up i didn’t
mind that it wasn’t a ton of background. because!!! instead, we got a great layout of the political system mwahaha. the promised political intrigue in this book was delightful… leading into the trials! OH MY GOODNESS. i so loved the idea of earned-powers and all that comes with that, and i really liked how that played out and effected characters. the power system was interesting, new, and well done. i do have to say, for the focus/hype around the trials, i did think they were going to be more intense/longer than they were… maybe in the next installment…? 👀
for characters, i was really happy with our protagonists. our primary gal, lysta, was strong, smart, and genuine. you could actually see the character growth, the realistic building of confidence which had me rooting for her all the way. i would say the romance of the novel accompanies the plot rather than drives it or IS the plot (haha), and i really liked it that way. it was woven in well. torryn… honestly, i can see where he’s going as a character, and i look forward to his final arc, but for now his whole “edgy” and avoiding vibe just doesn’t do it for me. he’s written well in that i can see the goodness underneath his gruff exterior, he DID redeem himself here at the end, but we’ll see how he continues in the upcoming novels. i really am excited and intrigued to see where lysta and torryns relationship goes! on evanders end, i loved him from the start. rant: i seriously enjoyed evander so much. AND THEN HE BETRAYED HER. THE ABSOLUTE PAIN. i felt it coming throughout the entire novel and KEPT AVOIDING IT. i wanted him as the love interest so bad, and i hope he maybe(???) will have a change of heart. good old heart stab there. 🤠 my only real character complaint was that i felt drytas was never really explored or explained, just the figurehead evil guy. the ‘oh he just wants power’ felt to easy/quick an explanation.
overall, war hour is a great novel and i would recommend. i will likely be purchasing the paper copy for my shelf and am excited for the next installment of the series!! (that cliffhanger… ILLEGAL!)
i was lucky enough to be picked as an arc reader for this novel, and these are my honest thoughts towards the book :)

A good YA fantasy with maybe slightly predictable plot twists but that makes it a nice easy fun read. Recommend it if you grew up on Percy Jackson and needed something targeted at an older audience
Minor: Death, Torture, Violence, Blood, Gaslighting, War
