"Weapons win battles, people win wars, but true power can start and end both."
"War is coming and it will not confine itself to an hour."
Lauren Loscig is a debut author with her first novel, War Hour, releasing on the 26th of November, 2023.
I recieved an ARC and I am choosing to provide an honest review.
I am going to come right out and say it - 'War Hour' has got to be one of the greatest debut novels I have ever read. The author has a phenomenal writing style. Each chapter was written with intention, allowing the novel to flow, like the ocean that our FMC, Lysta, is in awe of. I read multiple chapters where the last sentence of the chapter prior was in direct contention with the first sentence of the next and had to go back and forth between the pages, not believing my eyes. This was genius and had me experiencing some shocked emotional reactions. Every character was flushed out and had unique interworkings in their lives, giving the reader stake into the court politics and relationships developed.
Overall, I was really impressed by the author's first book in The Broken Trials series (while writing this, my mind was blown by connecting the series name with the possible direction of the next books). I look forward to reading more, so much in fact, it pains me that I will have to wait patiently for the next books. However, I am excited to follow the reading journeys of others when they discover the magic of War Hour and cannot wait to discuss it in-depth with the family and friends I will push to read this book. My conspiracy theories are plentiful!

I saw part of the ending coming, but I’m still stoked to see how the story unfolds.

ARC REVIEW
This was such a good debut novel. I was lucky to receive the arc of this book and really enjoyed my time reading it. This book is very plot heavy but has some romance on the side, and even though I normally like a romantasy to be romance heavy I really enjoyed the plot in this and there was a perfect balance between the two. The magic system was unique and very interesting, even though I would've liked the trials to be a little more extensive. I felt like it was very short and simple while there was such an emphasis on how big of a deal the trials are. I think this book sets up a lot for the following books and I'm very curious to see where this series is gonna go (especially after that cliffhanger like WTF).

War Hour was one of my favourite fantasy novels I read this year!
The characters, plot twists, and unique power system was everything I wanted in a book. I did not expect to like it this much but the tension and fast paced story kept me on the edge of my seat. Both the protagonists and antagonists are well written, leaving mystery and question surrounding their motives and true nature. While the betrayal was a little predictable, it was nonetheless well done. I cannot wait for the second book, especially after the cliff hanger!
I am so grateful to have been chosen as an ARC reader, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and my review is 100% honest!

This is my first time being an arc reader and I have to say it was a great experience and one that pleasently surprised me. The book was really good and exceeded my expectations. I was originaly interested because of the magic system and how the powers are earned and while the trial scenes are still one of my favourite ones, I came to love the characters as well. Lysta is my favourite, which is rare, since ya protagonists usually aren't my favourite. She had well astablished motivations, stayed true to them until the end and she was charismatic.Torryn's character is intriguing and I can't wait to learn more about him. Someone I also hope to know more about is Bash. He is a minor character, but he had a cool attitude, that really intrugued me.
I have to say that the plot twist didn't really surprise me, because of the marketing, but that isn't really the problem with the book.
Overall I really enjoyed the book, the story characters went through, the magic system and different powers and the characters that bind it all together. I will look forward to the second book.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced reader copy of this book and I am so grateful because this book was amazing. I absolutely loved this book. From the beginning, the book starts out strong and there is action all throughout the book. The suspense is crazy at times and I couldn't put it down.
The characters are very well written. Since this book is written from the first perspective of Lysta, you never know who to truly trust and what everyone's intentions are. Evander: At first I didn't trust Evander at all - it's never the blond guy, right? But after a while, I actually thought that maybe they would actually join forces along with Torryn. Of course that didn't happen but a girl can hope. My heart still shattered just a little. I kinda still hope that he comes to his senses because he obviously cares about Lysta. Torryn: He's a true mystery to me. What's wrong with the guy? Why doesn't he give Lysta the full story? I feel like there is some kind of mate thing at play but who knows?
The plot definitely gave me ACOTAR vibes, but not in a bad way. The plot is very different, and so are the characters. It's probably more the setting with the courts.
Overall, I loved this book and I am SO excited for the rest of this series. This book deserves the hype.
Finally, I want to thank Lauren Losgic for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It would have been truly sad if I would've missed out on such a great storyline. Please hurry up and finish the second book soon

There are seven courts that form Aloria, each of them with their own Trial. It is a privilege to Trial for you court, to prove that you can beat it and make it out. The Trials give unique powers to those who survive and they always have something to do with the way you best it. But the people of The Court of Valor do not know this. Instead, they believe being trialed is something to fear since they are forced into it as a form of punishment because Lord Drytas is a greedy man who seeks power.
Survival is all Lysta knows, keep your head down, stay out of trouble. But when she sees a young girl in need, she cannot help but interfere. She is caught and forced to Trial which gives her power that Drytas feels is necessary for his protection. But when she finds out what happened to the Trial after she completed it and Drytas let's his plans slip, Lysta puts her faith into someone she is not sure she can trust to get her out of this mess.
Knowing how Lord Drytas plans to use the untrialed citizens of Valor to launch a surprise attack of the rest of the courts, she takes matters into her own hands. But even in the Capital, no one can be trusted. The Lords and Ladies of the other courts are entitled and cruel but realising she can't even trust the person she so desperately wants to, well, that makes things a little harder.
My thoughts:
Absolutely mindblowing! I don't think I realised how good this book would be until I picked it up! The cover is so stunning I knew I had to read it but... just WOW. I love how @tbrwarriors and I agree that this read had such a Fourth Wing Vibe - not in the same plot sense, but more of how it is written, how the story flows, the high stakes and all the feels it gives you while reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed every single page of this book. There was so much action, deception and mystery it kept me on the edge of my seat - and do I have THEORIES!! I absolutely love the MMC and I just cannot wait for book 2! For a debut, this was absolutely phenomenal ❤️
