I want to give this five stars because the main story was VERY good, and it's well-written. Unfortunately in 2025 I can't give full marks to another white-savior story (and this plot is determined to be exactly that)

Do I recommend? That's a VERY hard maybe.

None of what was in the lower deck of the admirals ship was necessary - the entire plot would have been unchanged without the gruesome and needlessly cruel images of what was down there. Similar feelings about the other related scenes in the book. Mentioning the goal of the Jade's crew is fine, but it definitely was not necessary to put the violence against black bodies on the page.

Trigger warnings abound, but if your TW list is extremely short, give it a go I suppose.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am honestly not sure how I stumbled onto this book but it instantly hooked me from the very first pages. I went through the gauntlet with my emotions in this book. It was exciting, adventurous, gritty, angsty, heartbreaking, torturous, and inspiring. The storytelling is mesmerizing, the world is historical, the characters are captivating, and the turmoil is top notch.

The heroine, Bennett, is everything you would want from a female pirate captain. Her story is R O U G H but she is unbreakable. She has been on the run from her husband, Preist, for two years after he betrayed her in the worst way imaginable.

Priest, in spite of his name, is our biggest sinner but his devotion knows no boundaries, or laws. He is fiercely protective of those he loves and there is certainly more than meets the eye with this man.

I always forget I don’t like pirate books. Anyway, I was a bit bored and not really enjoying any of the characters so I looked up some reviews to help me decide whether or not to keep reading. After seeing comments on how Bennett is treated throughout the book, I feel very comfortable DNFing.

I had SO much fun with this. Fast-paced, dark, pirates. An FMC that is SO strong, two MMCs that are obsessed! Loved the reveals, she goes through some ROUGH times.
