A better than average mystery. Poirot is at his best, though he's not fast enough to prevent everything. There was of course the weird racism and anti Semitic undercurrent running below the surface but it was tempered by the way the jury was shown to behave. Seemed like a bit of a self aware jape. The facts are all laid out but there's still a little flight of fancy which is required at the end. Simple enough in a Cristie, for every character is related to each other somehow! It was a rather engrossing read and I read it when I really should have been working instead.
Edit: still as engaging and satisfying as the last read. This was a leisurely stroll encompasses the best parts of Christie, random foreigner speculation, classism, poirot sanctioned romances, the works. Very relaxing. An excellent suggestion which came up while chatting with a friend.

Another book, another win for Agatha Christie. I am inordinately proud of myself for figuring out ONE of the aspects of the murder.
Closed room murder mysteries are my favorites, as, by definition, you already know all the suspects, somebody here committed the crime. So, like Poirot says, we must trust nobody. Also, by definition, we should be able to reconstruct how it happened. And, as usual, we are presented with all of the necessary clues - or almost! Because one of the elements here feels the tiniest bit like a deus ex machina, a factor that was revealed much later than is usually the case. Slight deduction of points for that, otherwise, as usual, I was greatly entertained.

A bit dry for a Poirot but picks up as it carries on and the solution is of course brilliant. I read Christie mainly for the denouements and they rarely disappoint, so what’s a little bit of a wait for a heckuva fireworks show?
The best part of this one is a generous showing of Poirot’s cockiest tendencies which serve as thin veils for Agatha’s cockiest tendencies, having Poirot say things like, “I can’t believe I’ve just now said something that solves everything....” and, “of course! It’s so obvious that what you’ve just said reveals all!” when things are very far from obvious. It’s one of the greatest thrills of whodunnits - knowing we’re being tricked and things are being hidden in our plain sight - and when Agatha starts feeling herself a little is when things get really great. I have no choice but to stan cocky Agatha, swagged up Agatha, tells-you-she’s-going-to-dunk-on-you-then-dunks-on-you Agatha. This is heat check Agatha and I love it

Good old Hercule Poirot came to me when I needed him and helped me get out of my reading slump.
So thank you Agatha for that. In this one, we are following Hercule as he is solving a murder on a plane that he just happened to be on It has all of the typical set up that I love in the books and is very reminiscent of Murder on the Orient e=Express in the sense that we have a mode of transportation and a closed circle mystery.
I thought there was a lot more humor in this one versus others in the series and I was really here for it. I actually read this in one day and I think maybe I’m gonna pick up another book just because I’m really in the mood for him. The cast of characters was great and while Hastings is not in this one, we do good good old Japp. A great read.
