“Jude thinks he is too old for me. I think I could cut a strip of flesh from his upper arm and eat it.”
I’ve been trying to read The Seas since early last year — after I read The Pisces by Melissa Broder and desperately wanted to consume anything and everything like it. Broder had said that The Seas was a big inspiration for her own book, and a favorite of hers, and so my quest was born.
The Seas has certainly filled a The Pisces-sized hole in my literary heart. (It also made me wanna reread The Pisces ASAP!!) There’s little I could say that I think could actually do the prose justice. It’s bizarre, beautiful, and blue blue blue. The story itself is gripping, but the prose is what really made me weak in the knees. Precise and full and haunting and drab. Def a fave of the year so far, for me!

Is she a mermaid? Who is to tell you that you are not a mermaid? This book was an acid trip through a modern day Brothers Grimm fairy tale. A fever dream spelled out and type set onto paper. Haunting yet spellbinding, the narrator ebbs and flows through this fine line between reality and insanity. It becomes apparent that the narrator may not know what is reality and by extension neither does the reader. And I feel it begs the question, is she truly on the brink of insanity or is she lost in the haze of grief without any direction or sense of clarity? As she quotes, “words have more than one meaning.” Is she actually losing her mind or is she actually a mermaid or is she actually just grappling with the loss of her father? The beauty of this book is that we will never know and it is all open to interpretation. This is not just a simple, tragic love story but you can certainly read it that way if you want, however is it possible that Jude never existed at all? Was he simply a figment of the narrator’s imagination to cope with the loss of her father?
