honestly, I wouldn't have finished reading this if it weren't the chosen novel for my book club. I've studied Pride and Prejudice retellings for a long time and this missed the mark by a long shot.

This was a fun, fast read. Beach/summer read vibes if you are looking for something generally light.

Was hoping it would be more queer than it was.

Okay getting into this book was rough for me, so I started listening to it instead.  I love it. I have not read Pride & Prejudice. I have seen it once. Long ago. I knew the gist of it. Or maybe so I thought.

I loved the diversity.  I loved the LACK of transphobia, racism and typical toil that characters like this usually get subjected to.

There was a lot about this book that made me laugh out loud (“Misogyny!…. There’s just . . . so many flavors.” Jamie), and then parts that made my heart ache and brought tears to my eyes, like EJs walk in the woods with her mom & the ending.

I’m very glad I didn’t give up on this book!

This adaptation of Pride and Prejudice did a lot of things right: spreading out the family drama across friendships so it wasn’t so insular, making the landmarks make sense with the college setting, allowing enough room with the source material that it didn’t feel forced.

My only criticism is that even though it is beautifully progressive, I felt the feminist aspects were a little trumped up, especially when some things-like not calling your friend “girl” but being ok with “doll”-were inconsistent. I couldn’t tell if it was truly feminist or just grasping at feminist straws.
