Punishing
I give this a 3.5 stars…. The tug-of- war between the two MCs is brutal… to the point that it is punishing for the reader. I was enraptured but at the same time, it was too much. I needed more hope, more give, and more perspective from the MMC.
I’ll read the next in the series, with hope that it moves more like the last quarter of this book did.

well did i like it? yes. did it make sense half the time? nope.
i read hundreds of pages of this and still don’t understand what the hell just happened. i get that it’s a series, but literally nothing happened in this book except for those little snippets of plot twists or tiny plot development. not to mention the prose which would’ve been nice, but the words were just unnecessary sometimes because normal sentences or metaphors would’ve honestly sufficed. it kept repeating and i had to go back and reread to make sure i imagined the scenario right.
i like orlaith, but there were times where i just read her inner monologues and just went “…ok moving on” like her in-heat scene and everything was just so weird to me and how she always depicts that she can smell her own arousal like hello?? ugh imagine smelling your OWN arousal. also, there were times where she was very much incredibly naive and i know that she was sheltered, but some acts she did, she was definitely being a spoiled brat and rebellion being her whole personality. other times, she was okay and enjoyable to read through.
rhordyn??? what even was he about??? all i know is he’s a red flag and that his personality is about keeping secrets and its sooo annoying. i genuinely don’t hate when the male lead purposely pushes away the fmc from him, but in here it was just painfully annoying. i wish he had more personality. i wish he had interesting stuff about him like kai and baze except whenever it’s his pov i literally dont even see the contribution to it in the story.
anyway, i loved kai. i would give him a kiss. i love baze too. and cainon? im neutral about him. dont rlly know what to say yet. overall, enjoyed the book but again, didn’t know what was going on half the time. first half literally nothing happened, second half started to pick up, but the third half went back to being all cryptic and repeating monologues.

Wow. This book honestly blew me away. The world building and complexities that are constantly unraveling in Orlaith's world are so meticulous and have left me desperate for more! There are some twists and turns, deep secrets and a myriad of emotions that we experience through Sarah's expert writing. I am genuinely excited for the continuation of this story because there is so much more for us to experience.

Riveting...!
I’ve had this book sitting I my library for quite a while but never got around to reading it.
Didn’t not expect for it to pull me under so quickly that I was greedily turning the pages to absorb this story. Absolutely riveting and I can’t wait to continue the series!

Okay. Did I like this book? Kinda yes. Did I understand what was going on half the time? No. I had no idea what was going on until there were some serious plot developments.
I like Orlaith, she's fun and creative and kind and interesting. During this book she's reaching maturity and discovering who she is all while lusting after Rhordyn who I'm not a fan of. I'm also not a fan of the time where she was in heat. It was weird and I have no idea what to take from that. She's one of those self-sacrificing types who never gets the whole story of what she's sacrificing herself for which is mega annoying but it's probably just there to drag the reader along.
Rhordyn...talk about red flags in an unsettling way. The "connection" and the fact that Orlaith can't escape him or whatever is icky. The fact that she's his ward is icky. The way he treats her (I get it's warranted because he wants her to stay away). I just don't like it. He has less than a personality right now and I hope that changes in the next book which I'll definitely be reading because I have questions. But man....how many secrets does one guy need? Why can't he have a tiny bit of personality?!?! Ugh. Seems lame af to me.
I like Baze, LOVE Kai (and need wayyyyyy more with him in it), I'm intrigued by Shay, andddddd. I'm sus of Cainon but I still like him? Like why do I get Nikolai Lanstov type vibes from him so far? I know he has his own agenda, and it could be good or bad. Idk what to think about him yet but he's intriguing.
My biggest annoyance was the over the top prose of this book. Every little thing had to have more than one descriptive word thrown in, there were repeated and repeated inner monologues, and sometimes it just sounded dumb. I get that she's trying to paint some vivid picture, but regular words can suffice sometimes.
All in all.....two stars because the first 1/3 of the book was unnecessary, the 2/3 of the book was enjoyable, and the 3/3 of the book was downright aggravating in a way that made little sense.
