Shocking, not particularly clever. Unreliable narrator doesn't quite explain the plot holes. I hope the movie takes a cue from The Substance and plays up the grossness, it's the most memorable part.

My inner edgelord loved this book. Better than American Psycho by a longshot.

I was going to give this 2 stars but the climax was wickedly entertaining.

Before that point however, I was really not feeling this book. With all the hype I was seeing, the comparisons to American Psycho, and the initially intriguing narration, I was very excited to pick this up. Unfortunately, I found most of it all kinda pointless.

The weirdness often came across as happening just for the sake of it. Winifred was not particularly compelling, and with how sloppy she is it's a wonder that she made it to the climax without being caught. Any commentary that this text is trying to make on the nature of evil, nature vs nurture, what have you falls flat.

This book is extremely gory, and i think that’s the best part of it. The language really paints a vivid image which is startling and repulsive. The book has left me with questions, wanting to do research. In some ways, it reminds me of Perfume in the way it questions if evil is born or nurtured.

The best way I can describe this book is that if the narrator from The Yellow Wallpaper escaped at the end of the story and became a governess. It was disturbing and I couldn’t look away the same way one cannot look away from a car crash (complimentary). I found myself concerned with how often I was rooting for the main character despite the atrocities throughout the book. I laughed at things that shouldn’t have made me laugh and the humour interlacing with the madness as you anticipated the ending enraptured me so that I will be reading again. I was sure I had managed to predict all that would happen in the end, though one detail still managed to surprise me. If you would like a look into a disturbed mind from 1800s England, but still laugh along with way (albeit quite covered in blood), this is a book for you.

This book was a fascinating read. I’ve never read something like this. I loved that it was in first person, it felt like I was in her mind.

Wow, what a wild ride. This felt like A Christmas Carol made of intrusive thoughts. 😅
