2021 Summer (July);
Reread of Baby!Jean Arc
Most of these were read in a blur of summer bliss in a hammock in a backyard garden as I finally followed up on my original reads of the baby!Jean storyline that I'd gotten half into before falling out of again. I really do continue to love this storyline mostly for her.

It was kind of disappointing as a send off for this era of X-Men, which as far as runs go this was definitely a roller coaster of highs and lows and just inconsistent storytelling across the board, not just this title. I love me some crossovers here and there but I can't say I enjoyed very many here. Angel and Wolverine's relationship is fitting, but I wish Bobby's sexuality was better explored than just one page of "Bobby, you're gay", alas, they tackle it somewhat okay in the arc-finale of Uncanny X-Men 600, but it's still sadly rather lackluster

X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy and much shenaigans, mostly with Jean Grey trying to learn how to control her powers, but her powers may be needed.

The story is great x-men fun. However the cross-over Black Vortex issues in in the middle and are just confusing. They should have been left out of the trade entirely.
Jean continues to be the most intriguing/scary character in the bunch.

Hated issue 37. It's got a great cover but the inside has nothing to do with it. It's Jean Grey and Emma Frost training by fighting The Blob. *snore* And the artwork is awful. Wishy-washy, almost watercolour in style and angry looking.
Much of this GN is also covered in The Black Vortex.
But the last few issues are great, especially finally getting Bobby coming out to himself. And they were some great panels.
So of what I read in this, the beginning was awful and the end was great.
I'm considering going back to read the tie in run of Uncanny X-Men before moving on with the second part of this run.

I don't even know what to do with this volume. It ties in heavily with the Black Vortex crossover event, which 1) I haven't read; and 2) Not sure why I should care as clearly A Lot Has Happened since the last time I encountered the other heroes on the other end of the Black Vortex event. And I'm not even sure how the X-Men got mixed up in this mess to begin with, for that matter.
The volume ends with a fun if standard X-Men story investigating the Utopians, and how SHIELD and the rest of the world don't give mutants a fair shake, and then the issue where we learn a secret that Bobby has been hiding. I loved the interplay between him and Jean Grey in that issue, and also how the rest of the X-Men handle the surrounding conversation. Totally the highlight of the volume for me.
But overall, that's 1 out of 6 included issues that are actually worth reading. Which is a pity as I love the issue art they chose for the cover here. Bendis' run of the All-New X-Men ends with a whimper.

Probably would've given it a two-star if Marvel didn't treat this volume like a throw-away volume --- mixing 2 issues of random issues from a mini-event. There are no flows or logic to the way the collection was made.

Despite having one piece of a mediocre crossover in the middle (Black Vortex) the rest of it isnβt bad. The Jean/Emma issue it starts with is good, and the two issue arc with some mutant refugees living in the ruins of Utopia was fine as well.
