challenging emotional sad

I chose this book because of the great history and excitement of moonshine and bootlegging. Also, I'm partial to books with settings in North Carolina.

However, this story moved so slowly. And, there was too much attention given to the main character's eating disorder. The writer's attempted help/solution for that problem was half hearted in my opinion. To me this story just was ok.

I won this treasured book in a giveaway and waited to read it until I was on vacation. It was worth the wait! You will learn so much about making moonshine that you may be tempted to start your own moonshine still. ;)
Jessie Sasser, the main character, is a teen you will instantly fall in love with. She's a broken soul, mourning the loss of her mother from years ago, and bitter about the moonshine business she's sure caused her momma's death.
Taking the blame out on her father (who has a day job but earns most of the family's money through moonshine) and her worthless aunt and uncle. Jessie and her younger brother, Merritt, each suffer from the family moonshine business, but he's more accepting of the "trade" his family has worked in for generations.
Not Jessie. It's one of the fuels igniting Jessie's eating disorder - something not diagnosed back in 1960.
This story has heart, and you "feel" the characters, especially Jessie. I loved Mrs. Brewer, who stepped in and cared for the children when they were in need the most. I can't wait to read more books by this author!

I was not a fan of this book. I found the writing boring. I wanted to feel something for Jesse, dealing with her mother’s death from such a young age and her eating disorder…but I didn’t.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that addresses eating disorders like this one did.Treated with sensitivity and complete with the background of why Jessie is bulimic.
Her mother dies when she was young and her father would not talk about her.He is a moonshiner and Jessie hates it.She decides to destroy his stills.
It’s not a very happy book but it is one of those rare books that stays in your mind for days.
Beautifully written coming of age story.

I was really looking forward to what Donna Everhart would do after The Forgiving Kind. Wow! The prose is eloquent, easy to read, incredibly well researched, and believable. Ms. Everhart knows her subject matter in her heart and writes in a way to bring her own light to a difficult and complicated story. She truly has a gift for creating her characters and making the reader care about them. From the very first page, I was eager to spend time with Jessie and the rest of the Sasser family. They were realistic, and became characters I cared about.

A story of growth...hough sometimes painful, always necessary. And the nudge to do so can come from unexpected places. Just a perfect read. I fell in love with the all the characters and was sad when I came to the end. Compelling. Lovely. Human. Real. Donna Everhart's The Moonshiner's Daughter is a story that is pertinent even today, a distinctive work at once engaging and provocative. Such a gifted writer.

Thank you NetGalley, Donna Everhart and Kensington Publishing Corporation for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an impartial review; all opinions are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author brought the characters to life as the reader was drawn into their world. The ending was surprising but I would definitely recommend this author to book clubs who would like to read and discuss a well planned and detail oriented story. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Take a trip to the 1960's and a mountain town in North Carolina! This story focuses on Jessie Sasser as she works through her feelings and life with her family business of making moonshine. I enjoyed the details of the setting and the development of the characters. It was so vivid that I felt as I was watching the story unfold in front of me. How far will one go to protect their family?

I listened to this book and the narrator had a melodious voice. The pacing of the story was great. It was a little slow than I am used to listening to but that was easy to fix with changing the speed. Trigger warning-- There is a presence of an eating disorder throughout this story.

Thank you Donna Everhart for a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
