Plot or Character Driven: Character

There aren't enough stories of Appalachia, and this book is an unsung hero of appalachian stories. You can tell it's written by someone who has lived here.

The main character, Jessie's, emotions are expressed so well that it's easy to become her and experience everything with her, even if you don't relate to her. Her struggles fit a young person, someone hardened and wounded, yet strong. The way she handled the hurt of losing her mother was SO real. I haven't met many characters written like her, even though I've met her before.

As someone who grew up in Appalachia, the characters were very real to me. The author captures the nuance of appalachian people. Strong values of taking care of family no matter what, even to a detriment, but the honor of it. How caring for each other in your own way can be survival. It shows how all "bad" isn't evil, and how "good" isn't always honorable.

Mrs. Brewer was my favorite, as I met many women like her in my life. Self-sufficient, tender hearted, and strong as an oak tree.

This story was gripping, and I read it in two days and couldn't wait to turn the page.

This is a must-read and would be a fantastic book club pick.

I had never heard of any books by Donna Everhart before.  I thought this book sounded interesting by the summary on the cover. I love historical fiction so I thought I would give this one a try. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed the book. It was interesting, engaging, and well paced. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.

This book starts off with a very jarring experience for the main character Jessie and built the main idea behind the whole story. Jessie looses her mother at a young age and struggles with her dad and past family making and selling moonshine. The story line is very engaging throughout but the first half is a little slow. There isn’t a lot going on other than the day to day life of Jessie and her family and Jessie struggling with an eating disorder developed from a young age. My biggest complaint about the book was the lack of what could have been, a lot of the details came out of nowhere or you were left to imagine on your own and the ending was ehhh. The ending kind of left me with the feeling well that was one way to end it, not really what I expect. It was a good quick read with a good story line it just missed the mark a little for me.
