I finished this book a few days ago but I keep thinking about it! I listened to the audiobook and it really pulled me in; I was carrying my phone around everywhere with me to keep listening to it. This was a fascinating story: the protagonist is a teenage girl from a family on the wrong side of the law. They have made moonshine for generations and throughout the book her feelings toward her family and her place within it, her obligations, and the family business evolve while she is also dealing with grief, questions about her past, and an eating disorder. Set in North Carolina in the 1960's- I'd recommend to fans of Where the Crawdads Sing and Call Your Daughter Home.

I hated how her family treated her, and it never did get any better. I also hated the ending. But, the story itself was good and made me emotional.

Couldn’t put this down! Constantly wondering what was coming next. Everhart’s writing around disordered eating was so well done, in tandem with her ability to really share with the reader the characters dialect and speech. Seriously loved the characters/development. “In the end, it’s not the changes that will break your heart; it’s that tug of familiarity.”

I enjoyed this book and will read more from this author. It was slow at moments but I never  considered not finishing it. Jessie was complex and hard to always like.
