9I'm glad I found this essay. For me it's a first time reading Junichiro and I will definitely return to read one of his novels. When writers write about non literature related things they make an approach rarely seen. I am a sucker for this kind of readings and as an example I can mention "what I talk about when I talk about running" from Murakami and "fútbol a sol y sombra" from Galeano. Now with that out of the way... The book per se is gorgeous, it deals with themes so valid to this date that if you tell me that this was written yesterday and not in 1933 you've probably would have made me hesitate. The struggle that the author was having in the early 20th century Japan when they were adopting the Western way of life, architecture, eating, arts and a large etc.. Is profoundly relatable. 5 stars.

it started out kind of tame and made some interesting points but definitely with a nationalist tone .. it really went places by the end of it and they weren’t good

But what produces such differences in taste? In my opinion it is this: we Orientals tend to seek our satisfactions in whatever surroundings we happen to find ourselves, to content ourselves with things as they are; and so darkness causes us no discontent, we resign ourselves to it as inevitable. If light is scarce then light is scarce; we will immerse ourselves in the darkness and there discover its own particular beauty. But the progressive Westerner is determined always to better his lot. From candle to oil lamp, oil lamp to gaslight, gaslight to electric light-his quest for a brighter light never ceases, he spares no pains to eradicate even the minutest shadow.
