meh.
i feel like they flipped back and forth from "youre a horrible human being" and "i didnt sleep at all last night because i didnt know for sure you were safe" 🙄
also kestra wasnt my favorite. she was so ignorant and stupid. i nearly put the book down when she tipped the bathtub over. simon was okay i guess and i didnt see the point of trina being there at all.
also kestra is a horrible name. im sorry HENRY and LILY named their kid KESTRA? eww

This book had some interesting concepts and themes. Unfortunately, for me, anything interesting was overshadowed by the main characters being so young and making decisions for childish reasons. It's wild to think that all of the teens in this book are being given so much power when they have very little control over their own emotions and reasoning. It also feels like the author in order to keep readers in the dark just decided to obfuscate plot points for the reader which in turn made the character decisions make less sense. The mystery aspect of it all takes precedence over character growth and motivation. The romance feels very forced. The characters give you no reason to relate to or like them other than they're all pawns in the schemes of older people's machinations. I do think my opinion is heavily colored by my dislike of reading things from a YA perspective so there's definitely a bias there. If this series had older characters with more reasoning and agency then this would have been more enjoyable. It requires a degree of verisimilitude to get past the teenage mentality and to think that these extremely young characters could save their kingdom when they have the intelligence and emotional control of a very sheltered teenager.
A little melodramatic at times and very heavy on the romance but still quite excellent and had some good twists and turns.
UG! I don’t know what is wrong with me?!?! I LOVED False Prince, and this book’s protagonist has the same “stick it!” energy, but the push and pull of Simon and Kas’s relationship just feels so disjointed - and it’s itching at me.
The story and everything is fun though! I was honestly so afraid to start reading it. I’m partway into the next Glamorist book and have been suffocating in the powerlessness of their situation in Venice. I also had nose surgery and have been having trouble sleeping for the last week, but I blame most of my inability to function from the tension of what that book was doing to me. So I hoped this book would not be so bad....
And it wasn’t. I want to see how it all plays out.
