TW: mention of animal death
as someone who does not want children of their own - I’m strangely often drawn to stories about monstrous motherhood. I wanted to love this book but in the end for me it was good but not incredible.
I love a “what the fuck did I just read” kind of book, on which this definitely delivered. As an artist myself the writing of the scene where Nightbitch is at dinner with her art school friends is so visceral and painful and will definitely stay with me. But where this book kind of lost me (or at least needed a trigger warning) was the cat killing scene. Everything else about her transformation seemed to make sense up until that point where it just seemed so..unnecessary? the plot after that to me gets a little meh, but overall it was a strange read with great writing and metaphor use.

Not sure what I expected but it was not that. Do not recommend, the whole thing was just strange.

This book was both exactly what I thought it would be, and not, all at the same time.
The book was a great look at the hardships and horrors of motherhood and how it transforms women. As someone who has not had children I still felt like I could connect with the narrative.
It got a little too ephemeral for me at the end. I thinkher reclaiming her identity as an artist, and as someone part of the collective, instead of an individual mother against the world was great, but it also disconnected the narrative a bit for me. I also felt like the husband was a weird cardboard cut out of a man that just was there? He never really moved the narrative along besides being someone she was funnelling her rage at.
Overall, the book was good but I don’t think it’s something I will be coming back to.

Wow fucking wow. Ok I think I’ve found my favourite book of the year, if something tops this I’ll eat my words.
