interesting premise except i felt like i couldnt quite relate to it because to me it felt so white women feminism coded…. i know the book does address that in a couple of sentences but i guess i cldnt really empathise with nightbitch knowing real women in my life who struggled with these things on top of having to deal with poverty, race issues etc…..

a very good commentary on the physicality of motherhood. very blatantly about the experiences of white middle-class motherhood - not a bad thing and very beautifully written, but because of that there are some parts i found frustrating.

If I hadn't been listening to the audiobook version of this, I probably would have ended up DNF'ing a long time ago.

I know what the author was trying to do, but unfortunately the execution was severely lacking for me. Describing all the characters as The Mother, The Husband etc just left me feeling like I couldn't connect with any of them.

I was honestly bored a good chunk of the time and the ending was a letdown. I'm not sure if I would pick up another book by this author.

“Nightbitch had ordered a kale salad…and the longer she ate, the more kale seemed to appear on her plate.”

Or, to put it another way: I wanted to read a book about an unhinged woman railing against the patriarchy and the stifling demands of motherhood and the longer I read that book, the more unnecessary and repetitive and boring the metaphor became.

Also, why, WHY do none of the reviews of this book mention the cat?

Between this and All Fours, I think I am simply NOT 👏🏻 HERE 👏🏻 FOR 👏🏻 NOVELS 👏🏻 AS 👏🏻 PERFORMANCE 👏🏻 ART.

I almost didn't make it through the first section of the book because it revealed in intimate detail every single one of my personal fears about the idea of having a child. It's a decision I've been putting off making because I'm so scared it might mean losing myself entirely.

The rest of the book perfectly encapsulated the messy, painful, hideous, exhilarating metamorphosis that can happen (and possibly HAS to happen) in order to reclaim and redefine yourself after such a fundamental life change.

I found myself crying through the last 20 pages just from a kind of intense cathartic release and sense of empowerment. Absolutely stunning. And really impactful at this specific time in my life.

Woman’s rage at the unfairness of the world channelled into a literal transformation. Interesting plot, definitely unhinged in a good way, but I can’t say it made me want to read it again.
