Started off strong, then got increasingly repetitive and boring until it just kind of fizzled out. I think parts 2 and 3 were unnecessary since the story kind of reaches its pinnacle there and then stops? A lot of things are teased - like the Book Babies mums being dogs as well and the mother’s secret getting out - that never lead anywhere. If Nightbitch was just part 1 as a novella, ending with the mother as a dog on the floor with her infant, I think it would’ve been much stronger.
The book also beats you over the head with its message, and I feel like I read the exact same rant at least three times. We get it, motherhood is hard, a lot of husbands are shitty and uninvolved, the idea of a working mother is a sham, yada yada. We’re adults here, we don’t need to be told that directly multiple times.
For positives, I did like that the mother actually was turning into a dog and how it was slowly revealed. I also liked the prose when it wasn’t being direct, and the odd relationship Nightbitch has with Wanda White as her mental state declines.

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. None of the characters are even moderately likeable. There are some finer points about the philosophy of modern motherhood, but they're swallowed by this garbage heap of a "story".
She kills her pet, and that doesn't make the book edgy, it makes it cruel.

It was just too much complaining about being a mom
We’ve been taught that motherhood is a blessing, and that it’s beautiful when in reality it is violent, demanding and a task not meant to be completed alone. As much as this highlights how often wives are made single mothers by their own husband’s selfishness and incompetence, and how motherhood ignites a primal, animalistic urge to protect and nurture, the metaphor was kinda bad.
I personally think that by having her actually turn into a dog, you take away from the seriousness of this, and I can appreciate the Kafka Metamorphosis influence, but for this it feels unserious.
Anyway bottom line, if in ten years I have a child just know I’ve been lobotomised or cloned.

"Voia să-i spună fetei: e complicat.
