I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. She somehow captures the complicated and raw feelings of motherhood, especially in the toddler years (minus killing small animals, don't read while eating).

My goodness this book fell flat - I have learnt my lesson that just bc a book has an interesting plot doesn’t mean it’s an interesting read. It could have been a short story with a lot more pizazz but this was a metaphor that just went on and on and reminded me of being back in English classes pointing out the obvious like oooeee ‘matted hair’ bc she’s becoming one with her ~wild side~
Also because it was so long nightbitch got annoying very quickly and I was the kind of bored where I was willing for a chunky stag or bear to yeet her when she was out being a dog as symbol of patriarchy or some shit just you know maybe a slight arc or drama in the story but no just the same thing over and over for 300 pages

Unsure if I liked this? Maybe loved? The third act lost me a bit. As a story of a woman learning and accepting motherhood, it worked very well for me. As an unreliable narrator and person struggling with reality, great. As an artist trying to reckon with her self worth and notions of personal grandeur? Felt like a wish fulfillment journal exercise. Maybe that’s my own baggage, it’s certainly a book that invites you to sit with your baggage, bring it to the table for dinner. It had similar moments as such a fun age where the protagonist was self aware of being too self aware and also ignorant and it’s all a little too close to home. Also I’m considering getting pregnant and this was not an encouraging read for those of us who’ve always dreaded and seen motherhood as an existential death. Points for helping me uncover some mommy issue/early childhood trauma ❤️
