Married single mother is so overcome by motherhood she turns into a dog.
This was an interesting plot, which I liked more than I thought I would.
Reading about her killing the cat did make me feel weird, but that was probably the goal of the author, as it shows just how deep Nightbitch is.

The only reason I gave this a 4.5 instead of 5 is because it was a little slow at the beginning. Overall this book did a fantastic job of creatively capturing the complexity of motherhood and the emotional gymnastics that come with it. This is an ode to the magic of becoming a mother along with the loneliness, guilt, and grief that seem to be mutually exclusive with being a mom.
medium-paced

It was strange and I enjoy strange, but it wasn’t one I was completely in love with. It felt repetitive and started at 100 so it felt like there was nowhere for the story to go throughout the book.

This book falls loosely into a category of book I love and call “inner musings of a slightly wacky middle aged woman” (all fours, big Swiss), although this one feels the most like a slowly unfurling fever dream.

I’m having a bit of a hard time rating this book to be honest - the musings on motherhood are poignant, the plot is slightly inscrutable, the pacing is slow. I’m glad I read it but I can’t say I would recommend this book to most people.

ALSO I can’t stop thinking about the “now a major motion picture” sticker on the front. How could they possibly make this into a movie??? The plot is very….. internal. Lots of thinking, pretty sparse on the doing.
