excellent conception (beside the obviouses, the yearning for a guidance in the name of wanda white being one) but suffered from, well, a helicopter mom narration. coddled her readers… a lot, hence very lengthy. nightbitch as a name reads so millennial. but maybe that’s the point, i’m just not the target audience? i have a feeling this is supposed to have mothers saying out loud “tag yourself i am nightbitch doing xyz” and i fear that’s half a generation ahead of me. prose is alright but just something about it feels like a long rant. but is that not motherhood? and these flowery, elaborate words make someone feel understood. so i added half a star for the significance of the message.

also took me ages to get through this. once i switched from physical to electronic i cruised through it fine but this perhaps is a testament to how much of a drag this book is. carmen maria machado i’m so sorry.

I struggled at the beginning of the book to stay interested in the character, but about halfway through, I became so invested in the mind of Nightbitch and the "psychosis" like state she was experiencing due to the loss of her identity after she became a mother. While the metaphor is maybe a little overstated at times, I think it is still really raw in its depiction of parts of the female experience that can carry so much shame.

A literary art piece on motherhood and feminism. The author explores the pressures of societal expectations placed on mothers, the suppression of evolutionary instincts, and the importance of community. The Nightbitch realizes that with the birth her child, her baby boy is not the only one growing, learning and adapting to their new world.
There’s also a good amount of well placed relatable humor.
