I know there was a good story being crafted but the pace was too slow and I lost interest well before becoming invested.

This is a great story the carries you through so many emotions. You'll laugh, cry, fall in love with the characters, hate others, and so much more. It's a very powerful story that is based on the author's life and those of her relatives. Great story for any child or adult.

“…my heart soared, higher than any mountain I'd ever imagined, up to God's own perfect clouds, and I felt a peace come over me.”
This was my first time reading this book & I am emotional. I haven’t cried reading a book in a long time but this one did it for me. This is one of my partners favorite books, so we read it together and I can understand why this was a childhood to adulthood staple of theirs. This is not my usual genre of book and it took me a while to open myself up to be with okay reading this but I am glad that I did.
If this is a genre that you enjoy, you won’t be disappointed in this read.

Wow! Pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this book. Mildred Taylor and her family have done so much for themselves, it's very humbling to read and reflect on what I have accomplished..which is very little. Paul is so hard to like as a child, stubborn, and unable to hold his temper...but you see him grow into a man and such a gentle and kind one at that. I loved reading Mildred's note at the end and her fight for land, what a wonderful family.

Themes: Family, oppression, inequality, prejudice, connection to the land, and loyalty.
It flowed well and really caught me up in his triumphs and emotional lows. Though some very violent scenes occurred and jarring language was used, they were written in such a way they were not disgusting or inappropriate, just as painful as they needed to be.
Middle School students seem the appropriate age group for this book. The book is an easy read and the students by this age would have already discussed or have begun to discuss the history of slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow laws, oppression against blacks, and could handle the violent episodes in the story. It is also a longer read, appropriate for the age group. This would be an excellent book to examine as a class in a post Civil War unit.

Absolutely amazing! An epic story that reads quickly and whose authenticity is based on author, Mildred Taylor's family history. I was sad to see this 400 page novel end.

i read “roll of thunder, hear my cry” decades ago. i love it. it never left me. i’m embarrassed to say it was not until re-reading roll of thunder that i learned mildred taylor had not only written other books, but that the logan family saga was vast … this book, the first in the logan timeline, shook me. it’s unbelievably good. taylor is an american treasure.
