If you have already read books on emotional neglect, you don't need this book.

This is such a well-written, interesting and informative book that I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't deserve a 5* rating. I think I will keep going back to these lessons again and again! Can't recommend it enough.

This book has several useful nuggets of information about managing emotions, self-care, and so on. It also helped explain some of my self-criticism / self-indulgence cycles, and described some of how I felt disconnected and continue to avoid dependence on anyone.

That being said, it repeated the same ideas a lot (not what is there, but what is not there - this is an example used a lot). The author also mentions relationships as friendships or marriage,as though there is nothing in between, which I found quite alienating.

Overall, a decent read for ideas, a bit repetitive, a bit condescending, and a bit alienating.

I skim read this for the most useful and relevant information. I do believe emotional neglect is real and formative but needs more study. Some of what wenn describes here is emotional abuse. Most interesting to me is the category of well meaning but neglected themselves parents but that is given the least detailed attention.

The joggest aha was about my lack of self discipline and the hope that o can solve that not by self criticism but by better self care.
