I know a lot of stories for children are dark and/or violent, but with this one you also get the bonuses of it being extremely outdated and a little racist.
Moderate: Confinement, Torture, and Violence
Minor: Child death

I always adored this book as a kid. I must have been a little weird, but I still like it.

I read this on a whim because of its mention in Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, only to see that this could be seen in two ways: either it was a dark but solid read of a fairy tale, a great children's story - or it was completely ill-suited to readers, with inherently racist undertones. While I respect that the viewpoint of the story is (should be, at least) outdated now, overall it was an interesting tale to read.

This was my favorite book in kindergarten. It may even be the book responsible for motivating me to become a reader. I loved the story and I love reading it to my kids now.

What a charming children's tale. I loved reading this. I think I have some vague recollection of reading a story of this sort (maybe even the very same) when I was much younger and it was definitely one of my favorites.

One of the best read-aloud stories for primary students, despite its racist reputation. a great lead-in to discussions about responsibility and justice. May also be used with middle schoolers to discuss prejudice and racism in literature, as well as banned books.

Slightly creepy if you think too much about it. So don't think too much, perhaps?
