A strangely alchemical text, rich in bizarre symbolism, written by a kind of proto-protestant Christian mystic. A devout Christian who had, like many of his time, serious and valid concerns about the Catholic church. At it's best it is profoundly mystical and thought provoking. At it's worst it reads like a puritans fantasy, where everybody else is burning in hell, but he, and his dream waifu, get to live in the best part of heaven, and he more or less had it handed to him on a silver platter for reasons that are never fully explained. Seems like he's kind of just used to getting special treatment as a member of the nobility. Don't let that side of it put you off tho. This is a classic for a reason, and one of the most wonderfully strange books I have ever read.

This book was HEAVY

My reasoning for reading this iconic piece of literature was to explore its level of iconography, and to get a truer and deeper understanding of its importance. I will say, I can truly appreciate the beauty and thought behind this work.

The vivid descriptions of suffering, pain, and Dante's constant feelings of pity do their job as serving not only as a spiritual lesson on sin and divine justice, but a moral one as well. Even if you don't believe in a divine presence, you can comprehend the level of injustice for each circle, and the reasonings of each placement. Even if you disagree, by applying the modern context compared to what medieval Italian life was like can really change the impact of every single sin. Additionally, through Dante's pity, tears, and fear, you can take the time to reflect on what is seen as both good and bad in not just a religious context, but a secular one as well. Because of this, 'Inferno' is a wonderful and philosophical reflection of the human condition.

Highly recommend, especially if you love philosophy, poetry, and disturbing imagery.

One of the greatest epic poems ever written!
The Inferno was simply terrifying, the Purgatorio thought provoking, and the Paradise transcendent.

All along Dante’s divine tour he is encountering biblical figures, Greek mythical figures, notable historical figures, and most frustratingly for the modern reader, current political figures of his own day. Sometimes Dante provides enough context for the modern reader to grasp the importance of a certain figure of his day, but more often, the modern reader is left in the dark. Unless you are ready to break out Wikipedia every few paragraphs to discover who these people are (especially impossible when listening to the audio!), the mind can begin to drift. That said, you can imagine what a roast it is when Dante says, oh look, here’s this well known political figure suffering torture in the lowest level of hell!
