The hell part was great. Loved the suffering. :)
Then the heaven part came, which made me realize heaven's electricity bill must be why Russia's still swimming in money. Also, god apparently is a beam of light? But the said beam of light can also impregnate Mary and have a human child?? Going through all the heaven's levels made it feel like an episode of Cribs.
Purgatory was kinda ehhh, since it didn't seem that interesting + at some point the whole simpery for Beatrice and how darn-indescribably-beautiful-and-lustful-and-sdfkjsdhnf-she-is became too much. Dante seemed to be torn between writing a religious journey vs smut and settled somewhere inbetween.
Also, this was kind of like Christian propaganda? So, obviously, not my cup of tea. Also, they did my dude Satan dirty by saying that having six eyes is somehow ugly.

The barnes and nobles edition of this book is beautiful, with guilted edges and illustrations. But omg I resent the translation they picked, Henry Longfellow is so hard to understand and was a real barrier for me to enjoy or even understand what was happening in the poem. Onto another, better translation!
Fac-Fic of the Middle Ages.

I honestly really liked the story being told. If you remove the religious propaganda and the fact that it is told in prose, this would be kind of a banger. A straight fiction adaptation of this would go hard. I think the 2nd and 3rd canticles were less interesting than the first but I was also more engaged with Inferno. I wanted to make sure I really understood that section since it’s the most famous and the most referenced.
I’m glad that I’ve read this but am already sick and tired of classics sorry. They’re really not for me. This took me almost 2 months.

This poem is not for the faint of heart. Reading it in prose was interesting. It is missing all of the poetry of the piece, which is really important, but it is so much easier to follow the story. I think if I read this one more time, I could probably read a poetry version again and understand it.
