Too much to try and focus on. Slow, not engaging. Not something I’m interested in pursuing further at this time
While I don't subscribe to or agree with the religious zeal here, I am in awe of how visual and grotesque The Divine Comedy is. As a horror writer and a horror fan, that is of particular interest to me. I was also impressed by how modern this felt at times, both in terms of the emotional response it attempts to elicit and the way certain things are described (in "Inferno" this feels particularly relevant).
I only got partway into Purgatorio before I gave up on this audio book. The woman reading the book was a little to dry/British for my tastes. I think this could have used a little bit more passion in the reading. Also, the sound was very scratchy, like I was listening to a worn out cassette tape instead of a cd.
I think I'll try reading The Divine Comedy sometime since I enjoyed the writing style, but my own thoughts drowned out the narration.

On the notes: Excellent and very helpful. The notes were the only things that made it comprehensible.
On the translation: I think I would have preferred a more literal one that worried less about the poetry. As it was, it was often difficult to follow even outside the obscure references, and there were a few footnotes where he mentioned he added superlatives that were outright wrong for the sake of the rhyme.
On the Divine Comedy itself: too much political fan fiction. Also, Hell was the most interesting and memorable part.

I was pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed this. It did take me a while to finish but I wanted to make sure that I understood what was happening and being said.
Now, some parts did feel redundant and that bored me. However, I enjoyed the overall experience.
