EMILY HENRY YOU HAVE MY HEART!!!!
I started reading Beach Read about a month after my own father passed away. I was going through a lot of emotions and unfinished conversations with my father. I felt as if everything I ever dreamed of doing had both my parents involved throughout it all. This book was on my TBR book shelf at home and for some reason I couldn’t start reading it but after my fathers death I picked it up and felt like it was meant for me.
January Andrews is a spark of energy I needed, in a way I saw myself in her in the way she dealt with this weird feeling inside her of her father just dying. She used this time in her fathers house to ‘self-mediate’ or bring herself back into the writing mode but then a certain handsome gentleman next door has other loud plans. MR. GUS FREAKING EVERETT. This man made my expectations so high on men, (just like Alex from People We Meet on Vacation) being a cinnamon roll inside out. Giving me that love hate relationship with January, but all his life only ever feeling one of those emotions toward January.
The last few chapters made me ball my eyes out at 1am over her reading those letters of her dad. And fall completely in love with these characters and their happy-now love story.

“Falling’s the part that takes your breath away. It’s the part when you can’t believe the person standing in front of you both exists and happened to wander into your path. It’s supposed to make you feel lucky to be alive, exactly when and where you are.”
Alright, lemme start by leading with this: I am not a romance novel reader. Like, at all. Give me gore, angst, apocalypses and I will be the happiest person alive. But this caught my eye because I love the idea of bets and writers within stories. And I am so happy I rented this from my library!
Beach Read is incredibly sweet and heart warming, and brings up the interesting point that maybe happily ever after isn’t always the riding off into the sunset and white horses. Sometimes it’s better to have happily for nows and appreciating the little moments. I definitely recommend this book to any and all that are interested!

Content warnings for cancer, loss of a parent, extreme cults, domestic violence and abuse of children, car crashes, meteors, lightning, adultery, and alcohol use.
I really enjoyed the exploration of grief in the beginning and end of this book, but ultimately there were too many plots without enough space or sufficient pacing for each one. As a result, the middle really dragged.
Emily Henry also spent so much time on January's inner monologue that it felt like she was telling us the conclusion instead of showing how we got there. January would jump to some deep analysis of another character's thoughts that felt like an obvious overreaction. Yes, January might be the type of person to overreact or in an emotionally unstable place, but a great writer using first person would make her reactions feel more plausible and connected to real events.
As far as I can tell this was Emily Henry's first romance book, and maybe she is a great writer now. She certainly came up with a fascinating premise, even if the story fell short. Maybe I will give a later one of her books a try someday.

This was such a fun read!! For the most part, I was giggling and kicking my feet at the romance and really loved exploring January's relationship with her best friend and mom!
But I feel like the interviews they did with former cult members was so out of place. I think if the execution was different maybe I would have liked it more. It was interesting to parallel the main characters' personal experiences with abuse and dishonesty with a bigger story but the jump from walking around the site of a mass suicide to making out in the tent was wild.
