This book is at times raw and gut-wrenching yet also manages to convey great love and heartfelt beauty. The beauty that is found in family and friends, even if the circumstances are brutal and ugly. The beauty to be found in communities even if they are in a prison yard or a drug riddled neighbourhood. And the beauty and majesty that can be found in the individual, each containing a universe of potential, choices and questions - all that can be answered when given time.

The first ten pages or so of this novel really grabbed me and I thought I was going to love it. I didn’t love it. I thought it was clever and witty and relatable. The plot moved fast enough and the main character is very likeable. It’s not groundbreaking though, it’s told from the point of view of a teenage boy. His heroes are men, the villains are men, his friends are men. The women are victims or love interests nearly entirely. I’m not sure if I’d recommend it, it’s good, it’s funny, it’s smart, it reminds me of Outrageous Fortune with magic realism. But yeah, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I’d read the Bone Clocks by David Mitchell instead.

Maybe a little ‘flowery’ in the prose, but a compelling story of a strange childhood in suburban Brisbane, with interesting (if not entirely likable) characters and a heart pounding ending.

„Der Junge, der das Universum verschlang“ ist ein Buch über Eli Bell und seine Familie. Der Leser begleitet Eli dabei, wie er als Teenager heranwächst. Doch Eli hat keinen leichten Weg, seine Umgebung ein Ghetto, die Eltern getrennt, Mutter im Drogenmilleu, sein bester Freund ein verurteilter Mörder und sein Bruder verstummt. Seine Voraussetzungen sind also schwierig. Doch Eli hat einen Plan und er glaubt nicht, dass es darum geht woher man kommt, sondern darum, ob man ein guter Mensch ist.
Die Geschichte fand ich sehr schön geschrieben, ich wollte das Buch gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Die Charaktere sind super gezeichnet und die Dialoge haben eine gewisse Tiefe, ohne durchgehen bedeutungsschwanger mit Metapher um sich zu werfen, um möglich tiefgründig zu wirken. Ich hatte tatsächlich sogar etwas mehr Drama und Emotionen erwartet, gerade am Ende. Jedoch fand ich das Gesamtbild auch so gelungen.
