EPIC BUT I GOTTA RE READ THIS SHIT!!! GREAT CHARACTER AND DIALOGUE. i fortunately forgot this was set in Australia

Viena geriausių pastaruoju metu skaitytų knygų!

I do all my reading with my baby in my arms during naptime or late night wakeups. This book had tears silently run down my face, mute fist pumps or laughs that I had to smother so my baby wouldn't wake. The dialogue held a nostalgic flare, the author able to make it feel as if I was part of intimate discussions between best mates. This book. Read it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5).
(TW for anyone considering reading this book: lots of drug references and violence, including DV, murder). Once I got past the first 100 pages I couldn’t put this down. But it was a little slow to begin with but I can now understand why. There is so much detail put into these characters that I can’t believe they aren’t real people. I really felt and related to the characters so much. The book took me on the biggest roller coaster… Trent Dalton is a wonderful writer who makes this Australian portrayal so realistic that again, I was shocked this was fiction and not non-fiction. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. And don’t give up early on, “it gets good” as August Bell would say.

DID NOT FINISH: 19%

I wasn’t enjoying it at the time I was reading it and I’ve not felt compelled to pick it up again for almost 6 months, so at least for now I am going to DNF it.

What a roller-coaster of emotions - sadness, delight, fear. Loved the twists and turns, the tender loving relationship between Eli and Gus, the kids and the family and how this story depicts marginalised, poor people in a real, but also magical manner.

I found this a curious mix of beautiful prose, with brutal and heartbreaking scenes, some of which are hard to stomach. I found the first third to a half a bit waffly and I didn't quite know where it was headed but the end and resolution was worth it.
