Mi ostino a leggere raccolte di racconti anche se mi sono reso conto da un po’ che, di solito, non mi piacciono. In questo caso Enriquez ha fatto l’impossibile: farmi apprezzare libri in cui si parla un po’ troppo spesso di cacca e di vagine, per di più nella forma di racconti, quindi tanto di cappello. Molto più che in Le cose che abbiamo perso nel fuoco - di cui, purtroppo, ricordo poco oltre al racconto che dava il titolo alla raccolta, qui Enriquez si mostra davvero come l’erede contemporanea di Edgar Allan Poe, soprattutto nel racconto Dove sei cuore, che mi sembra proprio un omaggio allo scrittore americano. In generale, l’autrice è eccezionale nel mostrare le manie, le ossessioni, i feticci, le perversioni, le depressioni e i terrori della nostra società capitalistica: le figure vampiriche e spettrali presenti in tutti i racconti non sono quasi mai esplicite, ma spesso la loro esistenza rimane solo suggerita dietro a un velo di follia che copre le menti di ogni personaggio, e a cui ogni personaggio non può fuggire. Enriquez è una maestra del grottesco, talvolta anche in modo sgradevole, quando si concentra in modo maniacale e osceno sulla corporeità-corporalità delle figure che dipinge, ma del resto non può fare altrimenti se vuole rappresentare lo sporco e le suppurazioni di una società ferita, fobica e marcescente.
A combo of social horror and traditional gory-horror. Every single short story was so eerie and compelling. A girl with a heartbeat fetish.. teens who cannibalize their idol, ghost babies, ouija boards.. and more.
If you have *any* sort of triggers, this book isn’t for you.
I loved it though. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narration was just okay. I’d love to reread as a physical copy to get the full experience!!

These stories all felt half-finished--ending too soon, or just not fleshing out the idea fully enough. Not scary, and only a couple were compellingly creepy.
