This was fantastic. The reader captured the darkness and mystery of The Troubles perfectly, and I learned a lot about a period and country I knew little to nothing about.

This reminded me a lot of John Hersey's Hiroshima. Incredibly balanced and informative. I wanted to learn more about the Troubles without all of the loaded language that still gets thrown around, and although this book is mostly focused on the Provisional IRA, Keefe wrote so strongly without passing any judgment. It's a very empathetic book about a very complex and painful time for all involved.

Strong recommend.

Absolutely loved this - especially listening to the audiobook. The narrator was perfect. As someone who didn't know that much about the Troubles or Ireland/Northern Ireland to begin with, this story was so fascinating. I liked the way Patrick Radden Keefe weaved stories together, even jumping around in time as needed. I especially loved when it'd go on a seemingly unrelated tangent that would then end up being an essential part of the main story. So good, made me a rabid PRK fan!

I knew essentially nothing about this part of history and so it took me a little bit of time to get situated with all the different parties, factions, and characters, but once the context was set in mind, I was hooked!

I love narrative nonfiction where I'm learning a lot but also feel like I'm reading riveting fiction a lot of the time and Keefe's writing style delivered just that. Sometimes I felt emotional and other times I was on the edge of my seat. Keefe is a fantastic storyteller and I can't wait to pick up Empire of Pain!
