Reasons why I didn’t care for this book:

- too many side characters. I had no idea who was who and it was very hard to keep all of them straight in my mind.
- virtually no world building. The book says this Wild West was the result of the second US Civil War, which sounded like an interesting premise....except I have no idea what that war was about, or how the world was organized after that war ended.
- lackluster romance. A seriously lackluster romance.
- billed as a western, but other than the mc having 2 guns, there was no “Wild West” vibe
- Pity was not a relatable character and seemed flat and fairly naive. Actually, I didn’t care about any of the characters. None of them stood out to me.
- open ended ending (I’m not a fan of those)
- the plot was very slow moving

I was expecting a lot from this book, and it just did not deliver.

"It's an ugly world, and we need to take what happiness we can, when we can."

Gunslinger Girl follows Serendipity 'Pity' Jones, the titual badass gunslinger girl, who finds herself in Cessation, the last place in this dystopian America where you can pretty much do what you want. Under Miss Selene's laws, of course. After running away from home with best friend Finn, a tragic event leaves Pity injured and alone, where she's picked up a group of people from Cessation, and she talks her way into joining them. Once in the city, she's offered a chance at fame and fortune as part of The Theatre, a glamorous yet deadly show, where she can show off her gun-slinging skills. But is she willing to do what's required of her to keep her freedom..??

I loved this book. I found it very fast-paced, and I'm shocked that it was a debut. It was sooooooo good. I loved the world of Cessation, and I could easily read a full-fledged series set in this city.

Pity was such a badass bitch, Max was such a sweetheart, I just love them both.
SpoilerThe romance between Pity and Max, (which took a while to get to!!), was just great, and from their first interaction, I guessed they would end up together
. The cast of side characters were all great too, and I don't think I hated any characters (except for Pity's family at the beginning, screw those guys!).

Now, you may be wondering, Ashleigh, you loved this book and everything about it. Why haven't you rated this 5 stars. Let me tell you why:
SpoilerMax's backstory and the ending. Urgh. It just came out of nowhere, and I didn't believe it. So Max is pining after a dead girl? Yep, guessed that. But wait, that dead girl was actually maybe murdered by his parents, who are actually not poor commune dwellers, but the richest people in Columbia, and we're not gonna reveal who they are when Max is spilling his guts, because we still need a reveal later on in the book, and because of who he is, we're gonna fuck you over, and you're not gonna get your happy ending of Pity and Max running off into the sunset
. Arghhhhh. The last 5 or so chapters just disappointed me. It was a full 5 stars up until
SpoilerMax revealed all, or not all, if we're being honest
.

Despite my feelings on the ending, it was still a really strong effort, and I can't wait to read more from Lyndsay Ely in the future!

DNF @ ~200 pg

this book felt pointless to me. when i picked it up, i felt excited because YAY! WILD WEST! but no. it’s set in the future because PLOT. there’s a lot of emphasis on prostitution that made me uncomfortable and the acronyms killed me.

I loved the action and suspense. I never see anything coming, and this book threw some great twists at me.

I think the futuristic wild west setting was interesting, but we didn't get to see enough of it.

This book is really not the best. It had a good start but after chapter 10, the book seemed to go off the original plot. Also, the main girl, Pity, is just not a character I could connect with. She was to whinie for me.

Wow just wow! So I expected this book to be completely different then it actually was. At first I was thrown but then I got to know Pity better and the gang and I love (almost) every single one of them! I really loved the fact that this book also showed strong and independent women!

DNF'd 20%. I just was bored. And the writing was pretty dramatic and cheesy at points. Not worth my time.
