This is a delightful slice of life road movie across the galaxy, with wonderful characters, friendships and worldbuilding, but NOT for those looking for a plot

What a great book this was. It's exciting, heart-warming, confusing, sad, thrilling, wholesome and funny.. The book starts with an introduction to Rosemary, starting her first day on the job at the Wayfarer, and it's easy to assume the story is going to be about her character arc - but boy, would you be wrong. While we spend the first two chapters mostly in her shoes as a way to get introduced to the world, we quickly move on to the rest of the crew. Almost everyone on this ship can be classified as a main character, and everyone's story is fascinating.

It's never predictable, also owing to the fact that you never stop learning new details about the worlds. The characters are likeable, the story is super interesting and there are some high intensity moments in the book that keep you on your toes. And, as an extra "covid benefit", getting to explore fictional galaxies while you personally can't travel is just a very nice bonus.

If I have one gripe with the book, it's that I want to read even more about the events that happen. The scenes themselves are interesting and engaging, but I would've loved to see more of the aftermath. Often some seriously heavy shit happens and while I'm still reeling from the event, the book skips forward days or weeks (or "tendays" as they're called) and moves on, and I just want to know more.
I want to know what happened between Jenks and Lovelace when she got her body, I want to know more about Sissix' and Rosemary's friends with benefits situation, I want to know what happened between Corbin and the crew when he was released from prison, I want to know how Ohan handled being cured against his will.. there's so much stuff I just want to know about
. Look, the book's pretty lengthy as it is, so I get it - but still.

Overall, I just really like the worlds Chambers has crafted, and I love the characters she wrote. And if my only gripe is that I need more of the book, I guess that's a pretty good problem to have.

The world-building of this novel alone had me enamored, to begin with, but easily the best part was the characters’ development. I’m a huge sucker for characters and learning backgrounds, and in this tale, each character was crucial to the plot, which I really enjoyed. One thing I would fix is maybe kicking the book off sooner, as it takes some time for the plot to kick in, but once it’s off it’s fantastic. It also has representation on all fronts in this book, as the book really covered all types of relationships and I was so happy reading about each relationship between the crew. Reading this book made me feel like I was actually a crewmate on the Wayfarer, and I’d easily say this is a modern sci-fi classic. The ending also had some nice twists that I appreciate, and overall I really enjoyed this book. Definitely check this one out if you love sci-fi space adventures!

i genuinely fucking ADORE this book. it’s legitimately one of my favorites of all time. it’s fun and well written, with a wide range of characters and incredible worldbuilding. like,, the amount of smart and interesting concepts included in this universe is amazing. i saw that a lot of other commenters where complaining about the lack of conflict, which i get to a certain extent, but i actually really enjoy the almost slice-of-life style plot for a relatively large portion of the plot. this book is very character driven and focused, which is one of my absolute favorite things in a book. i might come back later and elaborate more on what i love about this book & my criticisms for it, as well as maybe add elaborations for content warnings, but this is all for now
