It was fine. Listened on audiobook so likely missed a few of the minor details. Not my favorite type of book. Explores rich lawyer family who gets caught up in white collar crime. Everyone is lying to each other which I just hate as a plot point.
Honestly I sloughed through this one - it wasn’t for me but it wasn’t bad. I had my audio playing for the acknowledgments from the author and gave it an extra point for the amt of research and thoughtfulness.
Another winner by Lisa Scottoline! And, Edoardo Ballerini yet again, comes through as a fantastic narrator!
Some twists that shocked me into pausing and taking a minute to myself. Character development that leaves you distraught and hopeful in the same breath.
Disappointing... Lisa Scottoline has been my favorite author forever! This book didn't have her usual zip and intrigue. I'm hoping for a new Mary DiNunzio series book!
A great legal thriller/mystery about the challenges of family and the things that bring us together and pull us apart.
TJ Devlin is arguable the black sheep of the family: he didn't finish college, he's not a lawyer, and he's had his own troubles with the law. But on his father's birthday, the 'golden brother' John comes to TJ asking for his help - he thinks he's murdered a client whom he suspected of embezzlement. As TJ investigates the situation to protect his brother, the firm, and his family he uncovers surprising facts that make him question the situation, and who in his family he can trust to have his back.

I’ve enjoyed previous books by this author, but this was a huge miss. Trying-to-meet-a-word-count writing style. Weirdly descriptive ramblings about every single character. Tells, rather than shows, the reader how the MMC feels about every character. Weird flashbacks to what I assume were formative events in his life, slapped into the middle of a scene like he’s been suddenly transported into the past. Every other sentence is about a car. Where he parked, which other cars he parked next to, locking his car, what noise it made when he locked it, shutting the door, etc.

4.5 rounded up. This was my first Lisa Scottoline and I had no idea I was missing out! I really enjoyed this. Voicey narrators are my absolute favorite, and I really enjoyed TJ. The audiobook narrator is also fantastic. This all seemed plausible plot-wise which was better than I can say for most thrillers.
I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am that there was a diabetic cat in this book. I had a diabetic foster dog for almost a year and a half, and I’ve never seen it in literature before. And it was really accurate, even down to tenting the skin for an insulin injection! Go, Lisa! The only thing I want to add is that if you have a diabetic pet you should also check their blood sugar right before you give an injection in case they’re low. PetTest makes good meters. That was a small part of the plot but I loved that it existed and had to bring it up. Hear me out: diabetes is manageable in pets! It is not a death sentence! They live normal and fine lives like Mango. :-)
I loved how flawed and real TJ was. The characterization of all the main characters in this novel was really nice. TJ is so flawed and has done (and still does) some really shitty things, but is also endearing and genuine and doing his best, and dare I say he’s sympathetic?
The ending was slightly too twisty for me, or else too fast paced. Maybe I just need to read it again to feel like I was completely situated in what was happening. But like, on the whole I enjoyed this quite a bit more than anticipated, which is really good for me after a rocky stretch of books.
I will read more Lisa Scottoline. I hate to say this, but i had assumed she was lumped in with popular-but-bad authors who I won’t name. I admire her high levels or research, and I kind of want to be her friend.
