I read A Tangled Web by Leslie Rule. The book is about Dave, Liz, Cari and a Tangled web of cyber stalking murder mystery.
As an Ann Rule fan I was excited to find out that her daughter authored a true crime book. I did my best to lower the bar on expecting like mother like daughter writing.
Leslie writing style isn't the same as her mother's but that is okay it was still amazing minus a few spelling errors in the book.
Dave was a single man out looking for some casual dating when he met Liz who wasn't really looking for that and begun a crazy string of cyber stalking after Dave goes on a date with Cari.
Over a few years she hurt soo many people in Dave's and Cari's life but she caused the most harm to Cari.
From outside looking in it's easy to see what was going on but I can only imagine how hard it was for everyone left in the wake of liz.

A Tangled Web was another great choice for our #bookishtruecrime Buddy Read! I am an avid lover of anything true crime, so needless to say I was excited to grab Leslie Rule’s debut true crime book. Her mother, Ann Rule, was a beautiful writer and extremely talented at reporting all types of true crime stories. Leslie Rule has continued her mother’s legacy in A Tangled Web, offering a heart-pounding true story of manipulation, gas-lighting, and deceit that affected countless lives. The story is incredibly intricate and there are so many people involved that I almost had trouble keeping track of who was who, and who did what, but Rule lays it all out. A Tangled Web shows what happens when stalking turns extreme and how the internet and technology can be used to deceive even further. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Leslie Rule’s debut true crime book and cannot wait for her to release another!
4.5 stars

I’ve been a huge fan of Ann Rule, I’ve read everything I could get my hands on by her. True crime is a subject that has always interested me what causes someone to murder someone? Was it a quick decision or did they wait and plan every detail? So when I saw that Ann Rules daughter had written a true crime book, I immediately knew I had to read this book! Tangled Web introduces us to Shanna Golyar and boy is she treat! She’s jealous I mean insanely jealous and twisted! When she met Dave Kroupa on Plenty Of Fish she knew she had to have him! Dave made it very clear on their first date he wasn’t looking to commit he wanted to casually date he had just ended a serious relationship. After a few dates she becomes extremely possessive texting him non stop and showing up at his apartment. She grows angrier when she sees he’s dating other woman. So when Dave begins to date Cari Farver it pushes Shanna over the edge. So when Cari goes missing after texting Dave that it’s over he’s confused but let’s it go as another crazy woman. Soon Dave’s starts receiving threatening texts mesgs and it appears there coming from Cari, and when Shanna starts receiving them he’s confused. The texts mesgs makes it appear Cari is stalking them. Caris mom receives mesgs but she’s certain their not from her and why would Cari abandon her job that she loves and her son? She files a missing person but the police believe she walked away. Dave and everyone has to deal with this whole ordeal for years, thousands of texts and emails and threats and even murder that lead back to one dangerous obsessed woman who will tangle you in her web and take you out if you get in her way!! Five stars!!

This case is BANANAS. I knew some of it but this book just went so in-depth and gave soo much info I didn't have.
Plus I think Leslie Rule really did us a solid by taking the reigns from her mom to write true crime for us. Appreciate her doing this haha

It must be a difficult task to follow in a famous mother's footsteps but Ann Rule's daughter does a credible job as an author of a true-crime book. This kept my interest.

Thanks to the publisher for the advance digital reading copy.

A Tangled Web
by Leslie Rule
Publish Date: April 28, 2020

I went into this novel blind, not even realizing it was true crime. Now, I am a true crime addict. I love Oxygen, Discovery ID, true crime podcasts, and MurderMysteryMakeupMonday on youtube is like prime time television for me. So this book was such a happy surprise when I started reading it.

It is about a case I was not that familiar with, the disappearance of Cari Farver. Rule describes in great detail the background of David Kroupa the man at this center of this story. HIs relationship with Shanna Goylar and her descent into obsession and eventually murder. Goylar used emails, texts, and the internet to cover up her crime. Fooling not only Dave but law enforcement as well. This book was definitely a the truth is stranger than fiction scenario. I was astonished at the lengths this woman went to for a man that didn’t even treat her well.

This book was well written but at times I did feel like there was more backstory or explanation than was necessary. That however, is my only complaint.

I think most true crime fans will enjoy this book and the case itself. Leslie Rule covers it thoroughly.

4/5 stars for me!

Thank you @netgalley and @Kensingtonbooks and Citadel for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

This story was so CRAZY! I was terrified the whole time because this is real life. And some people really act like that…

I like true crime. I like books where I get into the kind of a criminal or even the victim as morbid as that sounds. My mom is constantly watching ID and I absolutely love true crime.

When I found out this was her first true crime story, I was genuinely shocked, it was really good! The preface had nothing to do with the story, except an explanation on why the story came to be, and from there I was hooked!

What a rollercoaster! I loved every second, it’s been awhile since I read a book as fast as I read A Tangled Web! We all hear of online dating nightmares, and it was so different to read through one of those dating nightmares, kind of knowing what was going to happen, and still just sitting there for hours after it was over.

All in all, a very solid read!

This book was sent to me by the publisher in exchange for a review, but all thoughts are my own.

I'm a big true crime buff, so I should be the perfect audience for this book.

The crime itself is fascinating. There is a whole cast of horrible characters, multiple jurisdictions slowing down police work, and the victim's family being ignored by police. There is so much to unpack here and a lot of branches to follow to get the whole story. I love complicated cases and this one was right up my alley.

Even with such an interesting story to tell, the author really let me down with the writing. It was repetitive, confusing, and amateurish. Certain points were hammered home over and over to the point that I was getting angry. Cari wasn't actually the one sending all the crazy messages!? Shocking! Please remind me on every single page for the whole book. And there were so many exclamation points! For emphasis! Sometimes even italics! I didn't mind so much that it was not told in chronological order, but some parts that were confusing because of it.

Overall, it was a good story, but the author either needed to spend more time on the writing or the editor needed to spend more time on the editing. I had high hopes for this book and for Leslie's true crime debut, but overall I was disappointed.
