This case is BANANAS. I knew some of it but this book just went so in-depth and gave soo much info I didn't have.
Plus I think Leslie Rule really did us a solid by taking the reigns from her mom to write true crime for us. Appreciate her doing this haha

It must be a difficult task to follow in a famous mother's footsteps but Ann Rule's daughter does a credible job as an author of a true-crime book. This kept my interest.

Thanks to the publisher for the advance digital reading copy.

A Tangled Web
by Leslie Rule
Publish Date: April 28, 2020

I went into this novel blind, not even realizing it was true crime. Now, I am a true crime addict. I love Oxygen, Discovery ID, true crime podcasts, and MurderMysteryMakeupMonday on youtube is like prime time television for me. So this book was such a happy surprise when I started reading it.

It is about a case I was not that familiar with, the disappearance of Cari Farver. Rule describes in great detail the background of David Kroupa the man at this center of this story. HIs relationship with Shanna Goylar and her descent into obsession and eventually murder. Goylar used emails, texts, and the internet to cover up her crime. Fooling not only Dave but law enforcement as well. This book was definitely a the truth is stranger than fiction scenario. I was astonished at the lengths this woman went to for a man that didn’t even treat her well.

This book was well written but at times I did feel like there was more backstory or explanation than was necessary. That however, is my only complaint.

I think most true crime fans will enjoy this book and the case itself. Leslie Rule covers it thoroughly.

4/5 stars for me!

Thank you @netgalley and @Kensingtonbooks and Citadel for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

This story was so CRAZY! I was terrified the whole time because this is real life. And some people really act like that…

I like true crime. I like books where I get into the kind of a criminal or even the victim as morbid as that sounds. My mom is constantly watching ID and I absolutely love true crime.

When I found out this was her first true crime story, I was genuinely shocked, it was really good! The preface had nothing to do with the story, except an explanation on why the story came to be, and from there I was hooked!

What a rollercoaster! I loved every second, it’s been awhile since I read a book as fast as I read A Tangled Web! We all hear of online dating nightmares, and it was so different to read through one of those dating nightmares, kind of knowing what was going to happen, and still just sitting there for hours after it was over.

All in all, a very solid read!

This book was sent to me by the publisher in exchange for a review, but all thoughts are my own.

I'm a big true crime buff, so I should be the perfect audience for this book.

The crime itself is fascinating. There is a whole cast of horrible characters, multiple jurisdictions slowing down police work, and the victim's family being ignored by police. There is so much to unpack here and a lot of branches to follow to get the whole story. I love complicated cases and this one was right up my alley.

Even with such an interesting story to tell, the author really let me down with the writing. It was repetitive, confusing, and amateurish. Certain points were hammered home over and over to the point that I was getting angry. Cari wasn't actually the one sending all the crazy messages!? Shocking! Please remind me on every single page for the whole book. And there were so many exclamation points! For emphasis! Sometimes even italics! I didn't mind so much that it was not told in chronological order, but some parts that were confusing because of it.

Overall, it was a good story, but the author either needed to spend more time on the writing or the editor needed to spend more time on the editing. I had high hopes for this book and for Leslie's true crime debut, but overall I was disappointed.

Well A Tangled Web was certainly the right title.
This book is based on a true story, and I didn't know until I started the book that the Author is the Daughter of Ann Rule.
That being said this book tells about a murderous psycho who will do anything and then some to keep "her man", and keep others away.
From harassing emails and text messages, to outright threats against family members.
Once this maniacal mental case sets her sights on a man, he won't be able to get rid of her, unless SHE wants him to.

For those who don’t know, Ann Rule was THE best true crime writer! I didn’t care for Leslie Rule’s previous paranormal books, but this one was okay. The author does get a bit repetitive, but the story itself will definitely get your attention. What draws me to both Ann and Leslie’s writing style is that their focus is on the people involved--their actions, motivations and emotions--not the actual grisly and brutal act of murder.

Dave Kroupa and Liz Golyar had been dating for a while, and Liz expected much more than Dave was willing to offer. Although he had told her from the beginning he had no intention of becoming serious with her and that he would still be dating other women, Liz kept pushing for exclusivity. True to his word, Dave began dating Cari Farver and two weeks later, Cari disappeared and was never seen again. Cari’s mother, Nancy, received texts from Cari, saying that she had just quit her job and accepted another one out of state. Nancy didn’t believe for a minute that this was really Cari sending her these texts, or that Cari, who was very close to her family, would just up and leave her son and her dying father without saying goodbye. Nancy also had a hard time believing that Cari would spend the next few years (yep, you read that right, years) stalking and terrorizing Dave and Liz.

This was one twisted killer! With each turn of the page, I was taken aback at how totally the killer fooled everyone. Discretion is advised for those more sensitive readers during the review of the killer’s childhood.
