Well A Tangled Web was certainly the right title.
This book is based on a true story, and I didn't know until I started the book that the Author is the Daughter of Ann Rule.
That being said this book tells about a murderous psycho who will do anything and then some to keep "her man", and keep others away.
From harassing emails and text messages, to outright threats against family members.
Once this maniacal mental case sets her sights on a man, he won't be able to get rid of her, unless SHE wants him to.

For those who don’t know, Ann Rule was THE best true crime writer! I didn’t care for Leslie Rule’s previous paranormal books, but this one was okay. The author does get a bit repetitive, but the story itself will definitely get your attention. What draws me to both Ann and Leslie’s writing style is that their focus is on the people involved--their actions, motivations and emotions--not the actual grisly and brutal act of murder.

Dave Kroupa and Liz Golyar had been dating for a while, and Liz expected much more than Dave was willing to offer. Although he had told her from the beginning he had no intention of becoming serious with her and that he would still be dating other women, Liz kept pushing for exclusivity. True to his word, Dave began dating Cari Farver and two weeks later, Cari disappeared and was never seen again. Cari’s mother, Nancy, received texts from Cari, saying that she had just quit her job and accepted another one out of state. Nancy didn’t believe for a minute that this was really Cari sending her these texts, or that Cari, who was very close to her family, would just up and leave her son and her dying father without saying goodbye. Nancy also had a hard time believing that Cari would spend the next few years (yep, you read that right, years) stalking and terrorizing Dave and Liz.

This was one twisted killer! With each turn of the page, I was taken aback at how totally the killer fooled everyone. Discretion is advised for those more sensitive readers during the review of the killer’s childhood.

3.5 stars. Super fast and disturbing read. Trust your instincts and listen to those who care about you. Also, I wasn't bowled over by the writing style (definitely story driven).

I won an Advance Reading Copy of A TANGLED WEB by Leslie Rule as part of a giveaway on Bookish First! Thank you to Kensington Publishing Corp for the chance to read and provide an honest review review!

A TANGLED WEB is a true crime account of the crimes of Shanna “Liz” Golyar. Liz was a jealous ex of a man who never wanted a commitment. When she sees this man moving on, she takes steps that are unbelievably extreme. She was arrested in 2016 and sentenced to life in 2017, but she went undetected for years and continues to proclaim her innocence.

I don’t want to give too much about this case away, but the story had me hooked. Between the time that I entered the giveaway for this book and the time when I started reading it last week, the world has become much more plagued with distractions. To be honest I was a bit worried that picking up a nonfiction book, and a true crime genre especially given that this is not a comfort zone genre for me, would not hold my attention, but I was immediately drawn into the story. This has all the makings of a thriller in a truth is stranger than fiction kind of way.

Leslie Rule is the daughter of famed true crime author Ann Rule and she worked for her mother as an assistant and trial photographer, so the arena of true crime is not new to her. Though she has written other books, this is the first time she is publishing in the true crime genre herself. I thought her writing was very gripping and that she did a good job of balancing the narrative of the crimes being committed with her research into peoples’ back stories.

For the true crime fans out there, this is definitely one that you’ll want to keep an eye out for! A TANGLED WEB by Leslie Rule will be out on 4/28/2020!

The bar for this book was very high. I am aware that that is not fair to Leslie Rule, but I am not sure how she couldn't be compared to her famous, true-crime writing, mother Ann Rule.

A Tangled Web tells the true crime story of Cari Lea Farver. Cari vanished from Omaha, Nebraska in 2012. At first it appeared that she had just taken off, but her family, friends, and co-workers were very skeptical. Her boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, had received a text that it was over and since it was a new relationship, he believed it.
Cari's mother, Nancy, on the other hand did not believe that she had taken off.

After digging through and sorting through thousands of emails and texts sent from Cari after she disappeared, the police start to discover that there is a sociopath in their midst. Technology really is amazing and nothing is ever really gone.

Leslie Rule enters the true crime genre successfully and without missing a beat.

I really enjoyed the story - I actually hadn't heard of the murderess before reading this book. My only complaint (though only a small one) is that I really didn't need multiple generations of back story on so many of the characters. It didn't add anything to the story to know about Cari's great grandparents. All it did was give me more names to keep up with.

Don’t hate it but don’t love it. I thought she did a really good job laying out the details but I really needed some kind of organizational chart for all of her relationships and kids. Even a family tree would’ve been helpful since they talked about her family line. So overall interesting but glad I didn’t buy it because I wouldn’t read it again.

When Dave signed up for POF after leaving a long term relationship all he was looking for was some fun. He didn't want to fall in love, become committed or in anyway end up in a new relationship. He had oats to sow and he was a man on a mission. He must have been hot because he had a lot of interest. He meets Liz, explains his no commitment stance to her (You have to give him credit for not playing games with anyone.) and she happily agrees because she is looking for the same thing. After a few weeks Liz starts to push for a commitment. Despite Dave telling her it would never happen, she refused to let it go. Dave refused to cave in. And then he meets Cari IRL. He was instantly attracted but since he met her at work, did not act on the attraction. Until he found her on POF. And this starts the insanity. Cari disappears and begins stalking him. Stalking Liz. Stalking his other hook ups.

This book was not the best written story, technically, but it was an interesting read. I'm not sure the bit about Anne Rule was necessary but it was sweet that the author wanted to share some of her memories of her mother with readers who definitely had read some Ann Rule also.
