Not bad but also not entirely great, perhaps?
The author did an amazing job at listing all the trigger warnings and, in fairness, they were talked about with enough preparation. I think the gun scene was like chapter 12 from Haunting Adeline but like new and improved.
The author was also good at talking through the se CNC part; the kitchen scene in the cabin, to a new reader of dark romance, might seem non-consensual but the internal monologue of “if she wanted out she knows how to safeword her way out” and also the continuous reassurance of “do you know your safe word?” Or “if it’s too much do this” made me appreciate the dynamic.
That being said, I still feel like this is grooming lol this girl (21 years old) has been first shielded by her father then she’s been groomed by the Garrisons to get her lands, she’s been abused and now a knight in shining black armour (38 years old) comes save her.
The FMC comes across as a bit annoying / childish and I’ve been wanting to complain about that (considering that towards the end of the book Gerard says “I forget how young you are because of everything you went through”), but then ultimately remember that she IS young and she’s effectively unaware of anything really.
There’s a lot this theme of “Clint didn’t give me a choice” vs “Gerard is giving me a choice”, no girly lol he’s giving you the illusion of choice because ultimately you’ll still end your life at 21 to be:
- At home
- Breeding children
- Not having any friends
But anyhoo, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Sovereign is the first book in The Sovereign Mountain series, and also the first one I've read by Raya Morris Edwards. This is a dark cowboy romance. I'll repeat that. THIS IS A DARK COWBOY ROMANCE.
The plot of this one feels so unique, and the darkness in this book was amazingly done. There are a few books that I've read that had this aspect so well done. Not only do we get some fascinating spicy scenes, but we also get to feel the anxiousness that Kiera (FMC) is put through, as she finds out some things about Gerard (MMC). Our anti-hero MMC is such a complex character who has gone through a lot in his life, and I am so glad that we got his POV as well.
Overall, this book is worth reading, and I promise you that you will not be able to put it down. As this is a dark romance, there are topics in it that might be triggering for some people, so please read TWs before jumping in.
