This is the second novella in the Widow's Island series. I read the first book last year. Of course, it was a quick read. I enjoyed the first book more; however, if you are looking for a quick, suspenseful mystery, this is a good series to pick up. I do enjoy these little mysteries, so I will continue with this series; there seem to be about ten books in it.
This was a new series to me and while I wasn't quite sure how it would work with two different authors writing, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed all four books that I've read in the series and I'm look forward to reading more. A bit of romance, combined with mystery, an interesting locale (I have a thing for island settings) and quirky characters make for a good read in my opinion.
A novella is not always easy to read. Sometimes it seems that you only get part of the story or the story seems unfinished. With A Bone to Pick there is a complete story. There is a definite ending and no cliffhangers or to be continued.
A gruesome murder takes place and Tessa must solve the crime while taking care of her aging mother. Luckily there is help on the island for her. It was amazing how much they could do when they are such a small community with limited resources. It helps that Tessa comes from a larger department and she brings in the FBI to help. I liked how much she relied on Logan Wilde, a local park ranger. Tessa uses all the resources available to her while keeping her cool to solve the murder.
I am new to the Widow’s Island series and not familiar with the underlining story of Samantha and didn’t feel that this novella gave many clues as to what was going on with that part of the book. I am intrigued enough to want to go back and read the first book and continue reading the series to learn more.
This is a quick and fun novella by Melinda Leigh. Pick it up, read it, and meet some intriguing characters.

Meh again
I was hoping the writing on this one would be better than the first since I’ve read this author before and liked her. Nope. Still weird. Conversations don’t flow or make sense sometimes. The first and second book were short (which was nice) but not much of a storyline. I really dislike the narrator. That being said, I’m still going to listen to the third one. I can’t wait to see eye roll worthy conclusion they alluded to at the end of this one.

The second book in the "Widow's Island" novella series follows Tessa. I honestly like Leigh's writing better I realized after reading through the other novellas this weekend. I also like Tessa who seems to be a little bit similar to Bree Taggert.
"A Bone to Pick" follows Tessa as she responds to a call of a man who has been harpooned. A local artist, Tessa wonders who could be behind this. She gets some help from her best friend Cate's brother Logan (now the local park ranger).
So just ignore Logan helping on the case. It irritates me and makes no sense, but just ignore it. I felt for Tessa who is dealing with so much. She's trying to take care of her mother and help out her teenage sister. And is dealing with an angry hen that wants to murder her (the hen's animosity towards Tessa throughout this series is hilarious).
I honestly have to say though. I cracked up when the murderer is revealed and why they did it. I think if the two authors had kept the murderers to stuff like this it would have made me like the overall series more.

Oh my goodness this book ended to quickly! This was book 2 of the Widows Island series and I just can’t get enough!!! I read both books today (and got none of my chores done :(). So worth it!!! Where book 1 focused more on Cate’s struggles, this book focused more on Tessa’s struggles. All the characters from book 1 are there but we get to get to really get to understand Tessa and meet Cate’s brother Logan.
Just like the first book this story revolves around a murder on widows island. Tessa and Logan work together to solve the horrific case. Along the way they have to deal with personal issues and family. I really enjoyed where this series has started and now that I have read both books I can’t wait for more! I need to know more about Cate, Henry, Tessa, and Logan, as well as what happened to Sam. This book in true Melinda Leigh fashion is the perfect blend of suspense, twisted murder, with a hint of romance.
Do I recommend? Oh heck yeah!!! Don’t wait and start this series now!

4 Stars!!
As each book in this series is super short, I will leave a review on the last book.

Okay, I'm getting hooked. I wish the stories were longer but I'm intrigued about the story about their friend "Sam". I have to keep reading.
