First, let me say I feel like it would be so difficult to follow up Lights Out. Second, part of my issue has to do with many romance books in general.
The premise of this book makes for a great storyline. While most books involving the mafia go much darker, Allen kept it light and focused more on the characters. I also loved that Lauren was a fierce advocate for sex workers — and expressed WANTING to be a cam girl. The modern take is refreshing. As for Lauren and Nico together, while it was steamy, something just felt off. Throughout the story, they kept meeting and seeing each other and then the reader never hears about that place or those characters again (ie Nona). This also relates to my issue with many romance books and their main conflict. They argue and don’t actually talk. While this happens all the time in real life, the two people USUALLY have more to say before just walking away. Lauren and Nico seemed to give up more often than they actually tried. I wanted to like this one, but it just felt forced.

I had high hopes for this book but it just didn’t hit.
I think my expectations going in were wrong, I was expecting a mafia book with some semblance of plot. But it was literally just smut with a mention of the mafia everything now and then which was needed because there was little to no mafia scenes in the book.
There was also no chemistry between the two MCs apart from sex and when they said they loved each other i couldn’t believe it was anything but falling in lust. Which would be fine if that’s what I had expected the book to be about.
Issues between the characters weren’t solved and there was no character or relationship building on page. It was just smut. So if that’s what you’re looking for, go for it, you’ll probably have a great time.
