4.21 AVERAGE

One of the best feminist comics I have read! It is refreshing to see a colored female protagonist who is brave enough to face the demons of stereotypes in a patriarchal society. I also love the dead-pan humor underlying the entire work of art. Can't wait to read book two!

YES!!! YES YES YES!!

Bit corny, social commentary that could have been more seamlessly integrated but it's a good story!

Love this graphic novel! So much girl power and trying to smash stereotypes. Looking forward to the other volumes!

This is one of the funniest comics I have read in a long time. It is definitely all ages. I would love to read it to some of the children my friends have. It is also feminism done right! It is never preachy but is just so funny and makes fun of the silly assumptions classic fairytales make. I know that is nothing new but this is one of the best examples I have seen of it! Now Who should I buy this for, where do I get the trade?!

We read this a while ago so I don't know the date. Great book, strong female characters.

2.5/5
A fun, adventurous, and occasionally pretty humorous first volume.

I admire the writer's decision to actually do something about the lack of stories where Black girls are the heroes, so that his daughter can grow up with better role models. That said, I don't think Whitley has been paying attention when Black women say that what is empowering for them in fairy tales is not the same as what is empowering for white little girls. Black girls are always considered more masculine, tough, thick-skinned, and aggressive, NOT delicate, precious, and worth protecting. So choosing to get Adrienne into armor, give her a sword, and send her to save everybody else is... eh.

Also, I cringed when Adrienne's imprisonment turned out to be caused by her father's misogyny and homophobia. Like really, do we need more depictions of Black men as terrifying, tyrannical, violent people? Why is Adrienne's father the bad guy, as opposed to.. you know.. white supremacy? Come on.

Lots of fun, and well-told. Perfect for today, and a story that should have been told for years. Must-read. (If slightly short. And *maybe* the gags were a wee bit too plentiful.)

I really like the concept for this book. And the art is solid and full of life. But the writing is just so stilted and never gets past the part where this book is a lecture that the characters deliver to one another in dialog. It's an okay read, but it's disappointing because it could have been so much more.
