I loved this book, I think it was an amazing prequel to The Hate You Give. Thomas's writing is so good, she phrases things in a way that makes them so accessible to younger audiences while also making an impact with her words. Following Maverick's story as he struggles with teenage fatherhood is so interesting. His son Seven is one of my favorite characters from The Hate You Give and I really liked to see how his father named him, raised him, and built relationships with his stepmother and birth mother. My golden line from this book is “No mother wants their son in a gang, but no mother wants their son dead either. Pops made so many enemies in the streets that I need somebody to have my back. He told Ma I had to join. Kinging runs in my blood anyway.” (Thomas, 15) This quote is early on in the book and really unpacks the systematic struggles that African American communities go throw. It also shows how she uses a less academic voice to reach audiences while still explaining something complicated in such an understandable manner.
What an excellent prequel about Maverick. He put himself in a tough situation, not once, but twice and is trying to overcome it in this story. We learn more about his life and what he was like when he was 17. We also learned what Seven was like as a baby which was a different perspective than when we see him older in Angie Thomas' other book "The Hate U Give."

I continue to adore Angie Thomas. Her books are not breezy, but they are excellent. I adore her.
AUUUUUGH THIS WAS SO GOOD. Like, rip-your-heart-out-and-slap-you-across-the-face-with-it-repeatedly kinds of good.
This rivals THUG as a novel. I really enjoyed the plot, characters and the tone of the book. I also listened to the audio as I read and the narration was fantastic. This is the second time I picked it up (not being in the mood the first time - it's all about timing with some books).
I love the author's style of writing. You always feel like you're part of the story. Apart from that, i loved Mavericks character development amongst all the things happening to him. Such a good read.
