rounding up to a 4.5 this was SO GOOD and i need there to be a movie adaptation of it
Concrete Rose is chaotic
I love chaotic books, so this review is going to be very biased. This was very emotionally devastating and tense at times and lighthearted and goofy the next.
Concrete Rose is the prequel to the very popular [b:The Hate U Give|32075671|The Hate U Give (The Hate U Give, #1)|Angie Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1476284759l/32075671._SY75_.jpg|49638190] (both by [a:Angie Thomas|15049422|Angie Thomas|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1471998209p2/15049422.jpg]), and it was very interesting to see how all the chaos would converge into what would become The Hate U Give.
The new perspective of Maverick was very cool, and he is a very likable character. He tends to make questionable decisions a lot of the time, but that’s all part of the charm.
Witnessing Maverick’s struggles of becoming a teen-dad is very fresh, as most stories involving teen parents tend to focus on the mom.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone. You don’t have to read The Hate U Give before this one, but I think it was an added bonus to see the same characters in a different light.
(Also, I hate Iesha)

Truly enjoyed! It's been a hit with some of my students so I wanted to read it. It has more sexual content than I anticipated for a YA book.
Graphic: Death, Gun violence
Moderate: Sexual content, Pregnancy
I honestly don't know how Angie Thomas does it. This is perfect - again.
I zipped through this in a day, took me a while to get used to reading AAVE, but then I found it better than if it was tone-policed. Its quieter than THUG and OTCU, but so good and so thourough... damn

Technically the prequel to The Hate U Give, but this book stands strong on its own.
It wasn't until I was halfway through this book that I realized I haven't seen many stories about teenage fathers, much less teenage fathers that are doing majority of the childrearing. It's kinda surprising, considering the year we're in, but I'm glad these stories are being written. Angie Thomas knocks another one out of the park here.
