I cannot stress enough - if you haven’t read The Hate U Give, you might be a tad lost in this, but nothing to make it not readable.
This book has it ALL! Drama, love, babies, loss of a family member. EVERYTHING!
Angie Thomas wrote this to better understand Maverick “Mav” the father from The Hate U Give and she did a spectacular job. I honestly love Mav & Lisa even more now then I originally did.
Pleaseeeee give us another book!!!

Angie Thomas delivers again. I loved hearing about Maverick and Lisa before the events in The Hate You Give.
Thomas is so incredibly talented at submersing you into the culture and intricacies of the people you are reading about. The style makes the reader feel like they really know them inside and out and never want to stop.
Loved this book so much. 1000/10 recommend.

This author is so impressive. She writes such a believable character here. Maverick strikes the perfect balance between a realistically flawed teen father raised in a gang culture with the heart of a man who wants to be everything for his kids. Knowing the kind of father he becomes to Starr in the next book provides a perfect backdrop to this prequel story. Like THUG, this book continues to illustrate the realities of systemic racism without lecturing the reader. I can't speak highly enough of what talent Angie Thomas brings to such an important story.
Angie Thomas SLAYS again with this book. I am such a huge fan of her writing and this book definitely didn’t disappoint.
I haven’t read many books that have been considered a prequel. I was very excited to see Maverick’s backstory. He is such a special character. We met him in “The Hate U Give” where we see him as a loving father, but in this story he really shines and gets his spotlight.
One of my fave quotes was “one of the biggest lies ever told is black men don’t feel emotions. Guess it’s easier to not see us as human when you thing we’re heartless. Fact of the matter is, we feel things. Hurt, pain, sadness all of it. We got a right to show them feelings as much as anybody else.”
This story is for all the black boys that find themselves in hopeless situations. Who are made to feel like they are nothing but thugs with no goals, dreams, or aspirations.
I can’t express in words how good this book is and how powerful it is.

The drama, the highs, the lows, the dumbass decisions and the turmoil of trying to make good decisions - Angie Thomas hit it out of the park.
Another eye-opening read for a Missouri Gateway Nominee. This story follows Maverick and his many struggles, struggles someone his age shouldn't have: gangs, fatherhood, living day by day while worrying about the how. I enjoyed how well written his story was, I nearly cried many times, and I loved how the author didn't shy away from the tough but realistic moments that come with parenting. I haven't read others by this author but I will certainly now.

Loved this story! I felt like I was right there in the neighbourhood and the atmosphere of the book was really strong. Nice to learn more about how Starr Carter came to be!
