Fascinating book where the author is self-aware and honest. She is strong and finds ways to succeed, despite a lot of adversity.

It is sad and illuminating how much she blames herself for her self-destructive behaviors, even though it's pretty clear that those are coping mechanisms from abuse and exploitation.

The book strikes a good balance, so that the descriptions of the Brunei harem are not ostentatious nor self-pitying.

So far away from my life experiences that I kept finding myself having to remind myself that it was a true story. Totally fascinating.

Misleadingly titled - this one was less about the author's time in a harem, more about her struggles with identity and depression.

it didn't end up the way I thought it would (hollywood ending, etc.) But Im finding it inspirational. So much of the book focuses on the fact that she didn't know what she wanted or where she was going, which I can relate to.

I had hoped there would be more delving into interpersonal relationships, like in how deep/shallow/complicated friendships were with the other harem girls, etc.; while there was a little of that, it didn't go deep. Also could've done without some of the more lurid details and almost stopped reading a few times but kept thinking she'd end up writing more fully about the whys, and had hope that there would end up being more of a redemptive end to the book. Not recommended.
(I do, however, enjoy reading the author's blog.)

I enjoyed this book, it was an interesting read. What I didn’t like, was the jumping around she did. She’d be taking about one thing, and the next sentence was something else. Interesting story though.
