Adored this. This kind of generation-spanning dynastical story is absolutely my cup of tea. Lee is a master of delivering the most devastating moments in almost matter-of-fact prose which only enhances the tragedy by contrast. Though it unspools a little towards the end (the further the narrative strays from Sunja, the less it retains its focus and direction), I appreciated the depth of character which Lee affords to even the less significant family members. A delightful story stocked with some really stealthy gutpunches.

Why did it take me so long to get around to reading this? I don’t always love multi-generational stories but this was so engrossing and I learned so much. I wanted to get a little more emotional at the end and really feel like everything was pulled together and it didn’t quite get there for me, but an absolutely gorgeous book regardless.
