Wren is going to an elite academy to train and sharpen her alchemist skills and is accompanied by the bodyguard she wished she’d never need to see again as a new political group rises up and threatens her.
I loved the post war aspect of this. I loved an alchemist FMC. I love that the MMC had his own book project.
- bodyguard
- Forbidden romance
- Training school
- Spicy library shenanigans
- Dual pov
I feel a strong like for this book. It was written well, well plotted, good spicy treats but I didn’t love it. There was a few too many “buzz” words or even scenes that left me feeling grumpy. It’s not a bad thing but I think I might I have read this in not the right headspace.

So I’ve done this a bit backwards and not read the series before this one, but I’ve literally just finished this book and when I tell you it had me IN A CHOKEHOLD, I am not joking! The premise of the book was so good, I felt like I was being educated and gaining knowledge on elixirs and tonics but not having the misfortune of dealing with the poisons affects, near death experiences or the Gauntlet 😮💨
Wren was so fun, I love her character and the way she interacts with people. Her journey was so healing, there was a lot of trauma and sadness throughout this book so seeing her gain sparks of happiness was so beautiful...
… and not to mention her front seat experience of Torj Elderbrock because WOW, GOODNESS ME I NEED A FAN. That man 🧎🏼♀️➡️he can come and teach me self defense ANYDAY. The way he just loves on Wren is so wholesome and the yearning, eurgh, the touch her and 💀 and the way he just HAS to make sure she’s okay by running his hands all OVER HER.
I just cannot. They both ruined me with their adorable hate to love, and the jumping into each other’s arms and the following each other into battle hoping not to die vibes. I’m both excited and scared for the next book.
Helen completely ruined me with this ending, like full on screeching and messaging my friends frantically with all my feelings 🤣
Catch me starting the sequel immediately as I was lucky enough to get an ARC! Thank you @panmacmillan for putting me out of my misery, hopefully

DNFed 5% in, mainly because the writing style wasn't to my liking and I was way too confused by the story. Haven't read the previous 4 books set in that realm, of what I can only assume is the actual war we are seeing 5 years after. Some characters seem already fully fleshed out and grossly described, from those books surely. Our MMC and FMC are not that compelling imo. Chapters in the beginning are way too short. they are like 5 pages long between them, interceded with flash backs. So a difficult scene to set. I would have preferred something more action packed to start with and then the author can take us through the world and call backs to previous characters or events. Instead we have a rather weak beginning with obvious insta-love (they acknowledged it 4yrs prior to the story beginning) and a "no we shouldn't but I love you" dynamic with the guise of a mystery to create that forced proximity.
Its also very simply written. Not in a good, accessible kind of way, more so in a "I could have written that" kind of way.

I absolutely love bodyguard romances. What I didn't know is that Helen Scheuerer writing a bodyguard romance, is even more epic!
I loved meeting Wren and Torj in The Legends of Thezmarr series (and I highly recommend you reading that series before you start The Ashes of Thezmarr. Yes, you can read Iron & Embers first, but for the most emotional investment and reading pleasure, please start with Blood & Steel). But reading their own story, blew me away.
I was already invested with Wren and Torj from the Shadow & Storms and the way I needed their story. She had me hooked, I love seeing familiar names and places. It was like coming home. But we got to meet new characters and new settings.
Helen had the tension, the slow burn and an amazing [redacted] moment! I screamed. Torj is the ultimate cinnamon roll. And I want to be Wren, like Thea she is bad ass, but it's a new level with Wren. And I am here for every second of it.
YOU NEED THIS ON YOUR TBR. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU NEED THIS IS YOUR HAND RIGHT NOW READING IT!. THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO PICK UP THIS BOOK (OR THE LEGENDS OF THEZMARR FIRST).
AUDIOBOOK: I loved the audiobook, Matt Haynes and Emilia Bauer did a wonderful job bringing Torj and Wren alive with their voices. Torj's spoken voice is deep just like I pictured it would be.
